Seminar in Buenos Aires
---------------------------------------------------------
On behalf of ISTAHC, George Tombs and Cecilia Macedo
Attended a mid-November seminar on Health Technology
Assessment organized by the Pan American Health
Organization and the Argentine Ministry of Health and
Social Action. The seminar was held in order to prepare
the way for the international seminar planned by ISTAHC,
PAHO and the Argentine government in Bariloche, Patagonia
in the last week of April 2000.

The Buenos Aires seminar offered an introduction to the
Concept of HTA, as well as to methods of promotion and
development of HTA in Canada and other countries. It
focused on research and information systems in HTA,
possibilities of international support for the
implementation of HTA strategies at the provincial level
in Argentina, and the course content envisaged for the
Bariloche meeting.

The Buenos Aires meeting was organized by Dr. Jorge
Daniel Lemus, Vice Minister of Health, and was chaired
jointly by Dr. Guillermo Williams of the Ministry of
Health, Dr. Antonio Carlos de Azevedo of PAHO, and
Engineer Carlos Parodi of ANMAT, The Argentine equivalent
of the FDA.

The objectives of the Bariloche meeting are to establish
a National agency for HTA in Argentina, to coordinate
HTA activities throughout the Mercosur (Argentina,
Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) as well as in Bolivia and
Chile, and to promote HTA in Argentina, through the
Argentine Medical Association among other professional
groups. Currently being studied is a formal agreement
linking ISTAHC's training programs, and the Universidad
de Buenos Aires, which offers a Master's Degree in Public
Health.
