BC Women's Health Centre
For A Reception
In Honour of
JOAN DONLEY
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1999
5:00 TO 7:00 pm
ROOM D210
At BC Women’s Health Centre
(Formerly Shaughnessy Hospital Building)
(enter at Heather Street and 29th Avenue)
Joan will give a brief presentation, sharing some of her experiences and her
perspectives. Joan will also be interested in the progress of Midwifery in BC.
Joan Donley has been called “the Matriarch” in the history of Midwifery in New
Zealand. She received her original nursing training in Saskatchewan, worked as a
nurse in BC, then emigrated to New Zealand. Following her graduation as a midwife in
1971, she has worked tirelessly to promote and support the practice of midwifery in
New Zealand, and in 1990 was awarded the O.B.E. for her services to Midwifery. Her
book, “Save the Midwife” is a thought-provoking, often very critical documentation of
the history of maternity care in New Zealand. And, at 83, she continues to teach
midwifery students at the Aukland Institute of Technology!
Please RSVP by September 2, 1999 by calling (604) 875-2269. Light Refreshments will
be served.
