"Unhealthy Societies: The Politics of Human Social Needs"
                                presented by
Richard Wilkinson, Professor of Social Epidemiology
                         Wednesday, November 14, 2001
6 pm, Kane Hall Room 130
(Admission free - No ticket required)

Richard Wilkinson initiated the current research and controversy about the
societal effects of hierarchy on population health. His research shows
that societies with smaller gaps between the rich and poor have better
health than those with greater inequality. His findings help explain why
the United States, the richest and most powerful country ever, ranks
behind the other rich countries (and a few poor ones) in mortality
measures of health in spite of spending almost half of the world's health
budget! (see http://depts.washington.edu/eqhlth/ for many of his
writings) Wilkinson is Professor of Social Epidemiology, University of
Nottingham Medical School, Nottingham England and he visits UW as the
Walker Ames Lecturer.
