Hello, my name is Véronique and I am a student in "Social Intervention in Mass-media Communication" at Laval University in Québec city.
In response to Mr Dupont who is encouraging " *all* [Health Promoters] to take every opportunity possible to make links with the media and help them learn *our* realities" I would say : "Please do so !"
In class we learn that a media is first of all a business and that what is in the newspapers respond to the basic criterias of what is "newsworthy". We also learn how to attract the media with health and risks subjects in what is called Media Advocacy. However, there is indeed some work to do towards the journalists and reporters. Media advocates can't do all the work on their own, some journalists have to be sensitive to these subjects to help HP taking its place into the various media. I guees that "fresh" journalists would be easier to convince... so the class visits would be great.
If any of you are interested in coming into one of the Communication classes at Laval University, please, let me know. If you ever want to know more about Media Advocacy, a very good text I recommend especially for its chapter 3 (The Media Connection) would be "Media Advocacy and Public Health. Power for Prevention" by Wallack, Dorfman, Jernigan and Themba, Thousands Oaks (Ca): Sage Publications, 1993.
Thank you
Véronique Dorval
