Canada's Drug Awareness Week is November 16-23, 2008. In recognition, a peer
education resource that supports the reduction of problematic marijuana use
by youth is being promoted. The "What's With Weed" project was developed in
2006 with youth, counsellors and educators and is sponsored by Parent Action
on Drugs (www.parentactionondrugs.org). The project provides the opportunity
for youth-to-youth information about the reality of risks for marijuana use
and the potential to avoid, prevent or reduce these risks.
What's With Weed resources include a peer education program for secondary
school students to talk to their younger peers, and a unique
website(www.whatswithweed.ca) where users and their friends can check out
use and potential problems. The website also offers a comparison tool,
developed in collaboration with the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health
(www.camh.net) to assess levels of use by people of the same age and gender
across Canada.
Evaluations show that both the school-based program and the website have met
their objectives and the website usage increases daily. Parent Action on
Drugs wants as many groups as possible to link the What's With Weed website
to their own sites.
For more information about the project or to order a Kit on the school-based
program or to receive the full Evaluation Report, contact Diane Buhler,
Executive Director, Parent Action on Drugs.
