Marie-France:  You might be interested in knowing that in Tanzania,
benefit marches are often used for fund-raising.  I was aware of many
in Dar es Salaam, some to benefit national organizations (eg for
conservation), others by members of a given tribe to benefit their
villages (eg money for a school roof).  Politicians could always be
counted upon to appear at the start of the march ( one even hiked all
the way up Kilimanjaro!).  Participants raised contributions from
sponsors.  Perhaps this idea has rural antecedents.  SK
