WORLD FOOD DAY 2001
PAHO recognizes October 16th-World Food Day. For over two decades, the day
has been observed across the world to heighten public awareness of the
problem of world hunger and malnutrition and focus attention on assuring
adequate food for all. Established by the Food and Agriculture Organization
of the United Nations, World Food Day gives all of us an opportunity to
focus on efforts to combat issues of poor nutrition in our own communities
and around the world. http://www.paho.org/English/HPP/HPN/wfd-2001.htm

PAHO ONLINE BOOKSTORE CELEBRATION
FIGHT HUNGER TO REDUCE POVERTY
"Around 800 million men, women, and children are chronically hungry. Hunger
causes illness and death, robs people of their potential to work and
cripples children's learning capacity."
-Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
This year's official theme for World Food Day is "Fight Hunger to Reduce
Poverty." The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
claims that "fighting hunger must be the first step to reducing poverty.
People are the engine of a nation's growth, and food is their fuel." Given
the importance of food and nutrition, PAHO's Publications Program will
support FAO by offering a 20% discount on the following publications:
"Obesity and Poverty: A New Public Health Challenge," "Maternal Nutrition
and Pregnancy Outcomes: Anthropometric Assessment," and "Nutrition, Health,
and Child Development: Research Advances and Policy Recommendations."
This special offer is in effect from October 16 to October 24 and is valid
for online purchases exclusively. Please click here to take advantage of
this offer: http://publications.paho.org/english/news.cfm?ID=41&CFID=84

ANTHRAX FACT SHEET
Anthrax, an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium
Bacillus anthracis, most commonly occurs in hoofed mammals and can also

contracted, but usually occur within 7 days after exposure. Direct
person-to-person spread of anthrax is extremely unlikely, if it occurs at
all. http://www.paho.org/English/DPI/pr011012.htm

STATEMENT FROM THE CANADIAN MINISTER OF HEALTH WITH RESPECT TO THE CASES OF
ANTHRAX IN THE U.S.
I have instructed my officials to continue to stay in close and continuous
contact with their American counterparts at the Department of Health and
Human Services and the Centre for Disease Control to monitor the evolving
situation in the United States with respect to the four individuals
affected by anthrax.
At this time, there are no cases of Canadians being infected by anthrax.
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease. It cannot be spread through contact
from one person to another. It can only be contracted in the following
three ways:
-inhalation (if anthrax spores are breathed in through the nose or mouth);
-cutaneous (through open wounds, abrasions or lesions); or
-intestinal (by eating contaminated meat, for example).
It is important that Canadians remain vigilant and report any suspicious
packages, envelopes or activities immediately to local authorities. On
September 13, 2001, the Centre for Emergency Preparedness and Response at
Health Canada communicated with chief medical officers of health in the
provinces to inform them of the signs of epidemiological and clinical clues
that may signal the presence of chemical or biological agents.
For the entire statement, please visit:
http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/english/anthrax.htm

The World Health Organization and the World Bank are jointly organizing the
First Stop TB Partners' Forum. Participants at this milestone event will
look ahead to acceleration efforts needed to meet the 2005 global TB
control targets. These targets include detecting 70% of all TB cases

E-HEALTH 2002: A NEW ERA OF HEALTH DELIVERY

The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) and COACH, Canada's
Health Informatics Associations, are pleased to announce the "e-Health
2002:
a New Era of Health Delivery," to be held on April 20-23, 2002, at the
Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Major transformations are taking place in the Canadian health care system.
Among other things, significant investments are being made at provincial
and federal levels to stimulate the development and implementation of new
models of health service delivery. In many instances, the innovative and
appropriate use of information and communication technology (ICT) is key to
enabling this transformation.
e-Health - the leveraging of the Internet to connect provider, patients and
government; to educate and inform health care professionals, managers and
consumers; to stimulate innovation in care delivery and health system
management; and to improve our health care system. The Internet has the
potential to significantly and irrevocably change the delivery of health
care services and patient care, and the management of the health care
system in Canada and around the world. Not only are the technologies and
applications changing at ever-increasing speeds, so are the dynamics of the
business surrounding the implementation and application of e-health tech
nologies and applications.
"e-Health 2002: a New Era of Health Delivery," provides conference
attendees with an opportunity to network, to share knowledge and
information, and to learn through the experiences of others. Innovation and
collaboration in e-health initiatives are the foundation for the scope of
the topic areas that will be discussed at this conference, which include:
Security & Privacy
Electronic Health Records
Medical Error
Telehealth
Primary Care Networks
New Technologies
Emerging Trends in Care Delivery
Best Practices in
Information Management

broadcasts carefully, and follow the advice of local authorities. There
could be increased delays at airports and other transportation facilities.
Please plan accordingly. Canadians with specific problems can also contact
the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Operations

travelling overseas. Important factors to be considered include the
individual's state of health, current immunization status and travel
destination, as well as the local disease situation. Vaccinations and other
special precautions may be required. For a list of travel medicine clinics,

conference sur
< E-sante : Une nouvelle ere de distribution des soins >, du 20 au 23 avril
2002 au Westin Bayshore Resort and Marina a Vancouver,
Colombie-Britannique.
