GLOBAL FORUM FOR HEALTH RESEARCH MEETS IN TANZANIA

The Global Forum for Health Research has announced that its Forum 6
meeting will be held in Arusha, Tanzania, November 12-15, 2002. Every
year, more than US$70 billion is spent on health research and
development by the public and private sectors. However, of this
funding, less than 10% is allocated to 90% of the world's health
problems. This disparity is often referred to as the '10/90 gap'.
Forum 6 will focus on the 10/90 gap and the efforts undertaken to
address issues raised in the Forum 5 meeting. For more information on
the meeting or for registration information, visit:

RE-EVALUATION OF MAMMOGRAPHY SCREENING

One million women develop breast cancer each year world-wide. Early
detection and treatment are considered the most promising approach to
reduce breast cancer mortality. The consensus on the value of
mammography in breast cancer screening programs has recently been
challenged by Danish investigators associated with the Cochrane
Collaboration. The available evidence on breast cancer screening was
evaluated in Lyon by a Working Group convened by the International
Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organization
(WHO). The working group found that many of the earlier criticisms were
unsubstantiated, and the remaining deficiencies were judged not to
invalidate the trials' findings. The full article can be found by
visiting IARC's website, http://www.iarc.fr/, and navigating to the
press releases page.

CANADA FINANCES TUBERCULOSIS CURE FOR HALF A MILLION PEOPLE IN
DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has announced it
will contribute over $38 million for new projects to help prevent and
control tuberculosis (TB) in developing countries. This funding
includes $3.4 million previously announced for tuberculosis control in
Afghanistan. The funding for these initiatives was provided for in the
December 2001 federal budget and is therefore built into the existing
fiscal framework. For the full announcement, visit:

WOMEN'S HEALTH SUPPORT GROUPS

The idea that women can help other women by sharing personal experiences
is key to the women's health movement. In the early 1970s, these ideas
were expressed through the creation of women's health collectives.
Today the groups are more specialized - addressing specific needs
associated with health challenges. There are diverse forms - from live
online chats to drama groups. These groups are now increasingly accepted
and studied for the important role they can play in protecting and
supporting women's health. For the complete feature article, visit:
