Project Officer: Community Intervention Planning and Evaluation

This position has been designed to strengthen the evidence base and quality of
preventive interventions designed at a community level. The main focus will be
on neighbourhood-level interventions in early childhood as part of a
comprehensive poverty reduction program. The successful applicant will have
experience in designing, implementing and evaluating health promotion
interventions in neighbourhoods, schools, worksites or other organisations. A
strong grasp of the academic literature in this field is required as well as
practice or policy experience. The applicant should be familiar with change
theories at a community level, the selection of strategies, evaluation methods
and designing interventions for increased sustainability. The main task will be
to build an evaluation framework for whole-community intervention and to seed
evaluation activities into ongoing program development. She/he should be
thoroughly comfortable with reading and critically appraising research and
academic literature and translating the learning into the practical design and
measurement of interventions. The successful applicant will work as part of a
team involving early childhood field workers, policy makers, funding bodies,
academic-based researchers and community members. The position is located
within a multidisciplinary research centre. It will involve grassroots work in
the community.

The position involves a high degree of creativity. Decision making on key issues
and final plans will involve a cross section of parties. The position is part of
broader poverty reduction project anchored at the United Way by Dariel Bateman.

Applicants should posses an appropriate masters degree or higher, relevant prior
experience and excellent oral and written communication skills, including the
writing of peer reviewed publications. The successful applicant will be a
natural leader, a motivator and comfortable working with a high degree of
autonomy and a broad range of people. Community development experience is
essential and training in community psychology would be an advantage.

The position is full time, jointly funded by the University and United Way of
