CSIH report on United Nations Special Session on HIV/AIDS - 25-27 June,
2001, New York

This report was prepared by Paulette Schatz, director of CSIH's Youth for
Health Ukraine-Canada project and coordinator of CSIH's Central and Eastern
European Program. Paulette attended the session on behalf of CSIH.

The General Assembly approved a declaration that outlines how the world
should proceed in its fight against HIV/AIDS. Despite the frightening
nature of AIDS and some countries' denial of its presence and threat, this
statement from the majority of countries shows that there is a sense of
solidarity in fighting the disease. Secretary-General Kofi Annan reminded
everyone that AIDS to date has left nearly 22 million people dead, more
than 36 million living with AIDS or HIV, and 13 million children orphaned.
And every day another 15,000 people are infected with HIV.

patterns had on men's and women's well-being.
