Hello Penney,

I am interested in the intersection of violence prevention and health
promotion. A few years ago (1998), my partner and I presented at the OPHA
conference on screening questions for health care professional to be used in
interviewing, assessing, counselling women. If memory service me correctly,
we borrowed extensively from the Vancouver General Hospital protocol to
screen all women presenting in their emergency room. The multidisciplinary
approach has increased the abuse disclosure rate significantly and can open
the channel of communication between the women and the health care
professionals about abuse and violence. (www.vanhosp.bc.ca)

This same protocol could be easily incorporated into other health care
settings including the Ontario Healthy Baby/Healthy Children Program. The
HBHC assessment tool has a section to record violence and abuse history of
the parent. (Don't get me started on the almost exclusive mother-focus of
the program and assessment tool.) It should be noted that the HBHC tools are
almost identical to the Children's Aid Society intake assessment forms to
assess risk.

I would suggest that the article should include practical tips for health
professionals to engage women to talk about abuse and violence in their
relationships and make suggestions for policies to support such strategies.
I look forward to your article.

Bonnie

Hello to all,

I am preparing to write a feature for the Ontario Health Promotion Email
Bulletin for June on Violence Prevention and Health Promotion and would
like to hear from folks who have an interest in the intersection of Health
Promotion and Violence Prevention or know of innovative programs.

Thanks, Penney
