OSNPPH School Nutrition Workgroup to Launch Call to Action

The Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health School
Nutrition Workgroup is set to release a Call to Action -- Creating a Healthy
School Nutrition Environment at the end of March to coincide with the
National Nutrition Month campaign.

The Call to Action challenges the provincial government, boards of
education, school communities and public health to acknowledge and act on
their roles in establishing an environment that is supportive of healthy
eating in Ontario schools. A healthy school nutrition environment provides
students with the skills, social support, and environmental reinforcements
needed to foster healthy eating behaviours among students.

The OSNPPH School Nutrition Workgroup have made nine recommendations based
on the essential elements of a healthy school nutrition environment. To
support the recommendations and suggested course of action for provincial
ministries, local school boards and local boards of health, the Call to
Action addresses the importance of healthy eating in the school context and
presents the link between nutritional health, learning and chronic disease
in children and adolescents. The OSNPPH School Nutrition Workgroup strongly
recommends the implementation of mandatory school Food Standards that
emphasize foods with Maximum Nutritional Value in all Ontario Schools.

Copies of the Call to Action will be distributed to stakeholders throughout
the province. Additionally, the full English document and a French
translation of the Executive Summary will be available in pdf format on the
public side of the OSNPPH web site at www.osnpph.on.ca at the end of March.
