I think Kent Rasmussen's 2v REF GUIDE has word counts for most of Twain's
works.
My article on Twain's books in FIRSTS MAGAZINE (the combined July/August,
1998 issue) has print runs, including first year sales, and break-downs by
type of binding. Ham Hill's book on Bliss has even more detail on the early
books. I was unable to obtain print-run data or sales figures on Harper
books after 1900, but got it for the Harper books of the 1890s. My September
2008 update article in FIRSTS MAG might have additional info.

Subject: By the numbers
Being of a statistical bent, I have a couple of questions that I hope =
someone on the forum might be able to answer:
1. Does anyone have word counts for Twain=E2=80=99s full-length books? I =
think I=E2=80=99ve seen him mention such things in his letters or maybe =
his notebooks at times, but I never made any notes.
2. I=E2=80=99m also interested in sales figures for his major books =
=E2=80=93 say, the number of copies sold in the first year after =
publication. Years ago I found numbers for Innocents Abroad (69,156), =
Roughing It (65,376), The Gilded Age (50,325), Sketches New & Old =
(27,118) and Tom Sawyer (23,638), but I don=E2=80=99t remember where =
they came from, and I=E2=80=99ve never seen comparable figures for the =
later books. Are those available somewhere?
