THE EXCELLENCE IN ACTION CONFERENCE
LEADING EDGE PRACTICE IN THE USE OF THE
EUROPEAN FOUNDATION FOR QUALITY MANAGEMENT
 (EFQM) EXCELLENCE MODEL IN HEALTHCARE
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

ATLANTIC SUITE, MANCHESTER AIRPORT
9 NOVEMBER 2000

Since its foundation in January 1997, the Centre for Excellence
Development (CED) has established itself as a leader in the field of
excellence development within Healthcare. That leadership position was
given formal recognition by the NHS Executive when it was given the status
of a Specialist Learning Centre for the development and promotion of the
use of the EFQM Excellence Model in healthcare. To date, the Centre has
helped over 20 various Healthcare and Public Sector organisations to
implement the EFQM Excellence Model. The Centre is also involved in major
research projects within Higher Education and Healthcare.

The Centre's vision is to be the authoritative source of knowledge of
leading edge expert practice that is transferable across organisational
and professional boundaries in order to accelerate the achievement of
excellence both within and outside of professional practice.

The objective of the inaugural Excellence in Action Conference is to
establish a learning network in order to share leading edge practical
knowledge in the use of the Excellence Model in Healthcare. This
Excellence conference, which is endorsed by the International Journal of
Health Care Quality Assurance, will be repeated annually to help the
networking group keep at the forefront of advanced developments in the
practical use of the EFQM Excellence Model in an ever-changing
environment.

For our inaugural conference, we are privileged to have eminent speakers
willing to share their wealth of experience in the use of the EFQM
Excellence Model within their specialist field of practice. Amongst them,
Peter Mount, Chairman of Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, with his
wealth of experience within the Public and Private Sectors, will explore
many issues relating to the reasons why the Healthcare sector needs the
EFQM Excellence Model. Dr Johannes Moeller and Dr Hans-Guenther Sonntag
from the University of Bielefeld, with their wide academic and practical
experience in healthcare, will examine issues to relating to the
implementation of the EFQM Model in the German system of Healthcare. Bob
Allen-Turl, Chief Executive of the TNT Modernising Government Partnership
Award, has acquired a wealth of practical experience whilst achieving the
EFQM Excellence Award with TNT in 1998. Bob Allen-Turl has played a key
role in the development of the TNT Modernising Government Award from
inception to fruition. He will be looking at the importance of the role
and responsibilities of leaders in the implementation of the EFQM
Excellence Model. Dr Richard Bircher, a general practitioner, will share
his experience of the use of the EFQM Model within the Primary Care
setting. Terry Tricker, Chairman of Queen's Hospital, having worked
extensively in voluntary, private and public sector organisations, is
committed to quality initiatives in order to meet customer requirements.
He will explore the role of leadership in achieving excellence.

The purpose of the papers being presented at the conference is to provide
yet another opportunity for those who are at the leading edge of
implementing the EFQM Excellence Model to share their innovation and best
practice.

The ultimate aim of our inaugural conference is for delegates to take back
practical approaches to help them in their search for excellence, to
recognise the use of key techniques by leaders in addressing quality
improvement challenges and to develop a network of people who will assist
each other in their effort to discover quality improvement initiatives.
