Perspectives on Midwifery

The BC Centre of Excellence for Women’s Health announces Perspectives on Midwifery, a
new series of research
reports on midwifery and integration of midwifery into the health care system.

The series includes:

Reality, Opinion and Uncertainty: Views on Midwifery in BC’s Health Care System
By Jeanne Lyons and Elaine Carty
A researcher in the midwifery field observes and comments on the Home Birth
Demonstration Project Tour - province-wide presentations and discussions on midwifery
and its integration into British Columbia’s health care system. The report highlights
the responses of those attending the sessions and makes recommendations for further
communication about midwifery in the health care system.

Pushing for Change: Challenges of Integrating Midwifery into the Health Care System
By Jude Kornelsen
Considers the current relationship between midwives, physicians and nurses from both
a professional and interpersonal perspective, looks at specific objections put
forward by the medical and nursing communities and considers the way the objections
have had an impact on client care. The report also proposes recommendations for
improving interprofessional relationships and the obstetrical care offered to
birthing women.

In Transition: Nurses Respond to Midwifery Integration
By Jude Kornelsen with V. Susan Dahinten and Elaine Carty
Describes the results of a survey conducted shortly after the introduction of
midwives as a regulated and funded part of the British Columbia health care system.
The survey asked nurses about their knowledge of midwifery, experiences with
midwives, attitudes toward midwifery, and their views on how the current
interprofessional situation could be changed. Recommendations for improving
relationships are also suggested.

Each report costs $15, or less for low-income women.
