British Columbia Centre of Excellence for Women's Health
Women's Health Speakers Series, 2000

FILTERED POLICY
A NEW REPORT ON WOMEN AND TOBACCO IN CANADA

Guest Speaker
Lorraine Greaves, PhD, is the Executive Director of the British Columbia
Centre of Excellence for Women's Health in Vancouver, Canada, She is a
sociologist, writer and activist on women's health issues, including tobacco
use, addictions and violence. She is the author of Filtered Policy: Women
and Tobacco in Canada, Smoke Screen: Women's Smoking and Social Control, and
Mixed Messages: Women, Tobacco and the Media.

Smoking-related disease continues to be the number one killer of Canadian
women. However, little is known about the specific consequences of smoking
for women. Traditional tobacco control policy often ignores gender- and
class-based factors that help to perpetuate tobacco use among women. Women
may experience the effects of broad and supposedly gender-neutral tobacco
policies differently than men. For these and other reasons, a women-centered
policy approach to tobacco control is necessary to reduce tobacco use by
women and girls.
