Colleagues:

My work on health promotion, inequalities, and health have led me to
explore ways of thinking about policy that you won't usually find in the
National Post or Globe and Mail (that's The New York Times and Washington
Post south of the border).

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is a wonderful source of ideas
and publications. It recently published a monograph by Monica Townsend on
"Health and Wealth" and just released a book by Jim Stanford entitled
"Paper Boom" that describes how the real economy is not growing while the
paper one is. It also published an "Alternative Budget" each year at the
same time the Feds do so in Ottawa.

About the CCPA

The Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives is a national
economic and social policy think tank. It is independent, non
       partisan and has charitable status.

Origin: The CCPA was established in 1980 by academic and
labour economists who saw the need for an independent
left-of-centre research agency to counterbalance the
right-wing Fraser and C.D. Howe Institutes.

Research: Since then the Centre staff and research
associates have produced hundreds of reports, studies and
books on major social and economic issues. The CCPA
produces high quality, critical research and analysis of
government policies at all levels, and develops workable and
equitable alternatives. Its publications are written in clear,
non-technical language accessible to a wide audience.

Education/Communication: The centre publicizes its work
through its membership, through the mainstream media and
through other channels of communication. It hosts
conferences, roundtable discussions, and other forums for
debate among leading thinkers. It's staff and research
associates are frequent media commentators and contribute
       to major newspapers and journals.

The CCPA Monitor: All members of the CCPA receive its
information-packed monthly journal, the CCPA Monitor, which
offers news and views unavailable in the commercial media.
It's an invaluable source for anyone who has to speak about
key issues or prepare speeches or briefs.

Funding: CCPA funding comes primarily from contributions
of its 5000 organizational and individual members and
donors. It also does projects funded by governmental and
       non governmental organizations.

Governance: The CCPA is governed by a board of directors
comprised of representatives of major organizational
sponsors, appointees, and directors elected by the individual
membership. The board meets twice a year and holds an
       annual general meeting.

Offices and Staff: In addition to the National Office in
Ottawa, there are provincial CCPA offices in British Columbia
and Manitoba. The National Office eight-person staff shares
       research, writing, technical, communications and
administrative duties. There are also five staff in BC and two
       in Manitoba.
