The University of Ottawa, Yunnan (China) Maternal and Child Health Project,
is currently looking for a Health Education Consultant.  Below is the job
description for this position.

Job Posting     Health Education Consultant, Yunnan (China) Maternal and Child
Health Project

Background
The CIDA-funded Yunnan (China) Maternal and Child Health Project was
launched in 1997 by the University of Ottawa and the Yunnan Provincial
Public Health Bureau. Working in ten ethnically diverse "poverty counties"
in Yunnan, China, the goal by 2002 is to improve the quality of village
life and to promote the development of productivity and social prosperity
by addressing critical maternal and child health issues.  Training of
village doctors, village midwives and other Maternal and Child Health
workers uses a participatory, train-the-trainer methodology.

Job description
The Health Education Consultant will help strengthen local Chinese capacity
to develop effective health education materials for rural ethnic minorities
at the grassroots.  The consultant will work under the direction of the
Canadian project team at the University of Ottawa.  In the field, he or she
will work with a local counterpart and a team of individuals with
experience in learning resource development.

During 30 days of work, including a three-week visit to Yunnan, the
consultant will accomplish the following:
- Provide a workshop in Yunnan covering advanced strategies for development
of health education training materials.
- Guide local improvements in the design, development and production of
health education resources for use with grassroots health workers and
villagers
- Develop assessment tools to guide the development of tailored learning
resources for use with various audiences (e.g. ethnic minorities, women
with low literacy skills, village doctors and midwives)
- Develop a handbook for project Lead Trainers on production of learning
resources that describes advanced design, development and production of
resource materials for grassroots ethnic minorities.
- Provide a written report to the University of Ottawa.

Qualifications
- (Essential) Working knowledge in Mandarin (oral and reading
comprehension) and English.
- (Essential) Proven ability to produce health education materials that
take into account learner's understanding of visual images; literacy
levels; differences in learning needs and readiness to learn among various
target groups; cultural and lifestyle differences among various ethnic
minorities.
- (Essential) Experience presenting participatory workshops using a
train-the-trainer approach to teach others to develop effective health
education messages based on theories of motivation and readiness to learn.
- Familiarity with key developing country Maternal and Child Health issues.
- Experience working overseas in developing country setting (preferably
Southeast Asia) or with ethnic minorities
