Joyce - the work of Tom Valente at Johns Hopkins on Network Diffusion is
very related to this topic. There is a Sourcebook on this topic, created by
Dr. Valente available through the Health Communication Unit (call
416-978-0522 - available at no cost in Ontario). It is called "How Networks
Influence Health" and there is an excellent reference list included,
including Tom's own book on the topic.

As well, I would recommend a book by Robert Cialdini called "The Psychology
of Persuasion".
