Women's Health Speakers Series
BC Centre of Excellence for Women's Health
Vancouver

Politics of Deregulation
Women and Health protection in Canada

Guest Speakers
Linda Menheer and Barbara Mintzes, Working Group on Women and Health Protection

The Working Group on Women and
Health Protection is a coalition of women's health organisations, academics and
environmental groups formed in 1998 order to examine the implications of the proposed
changes to Canada's health protection legislation in regards to women's health and
well-being.

How does health protection legislation affect women? Health Canada's Health
Protection Branch is responsible for ensuring the safety and effectiveness of
pharmaceutical drugs, medical devices and food available in Canada. Current policy
shifts and proposed legislative changes are leading to weaker drug, device and food
safety regulation. This affects all Canadians, but has particular implications for
women.
