Intersectoral decision-making skills in support of health impact assess
ment of development projects
The following website contains a report of a WHO collaboration on
developing a problem based learning, training course to teach health impact
assessment in the context of water resource development in poor countries
through a focus on intersectoral skills. The course was developed over a
period of 10 years and piloted in Africa, Asia, and America.

Monument to aid workers honours friend of CSIH
Canada now has a permanent monument to recognize those who work in the
field of international development and humanitarian assistance, and
especially to acknowledge those who have died doing so.
The monument, in front of the Canada and the World Pavilion in Ottawa's
Rideau Falls Park, was unveiled by Governor General Adrienne Clarkson at an
emotional ceremony on a hot summer afternoon in June. Titled "Reflection",
the design was chosen in a Canada-wide competition and created by Nova Scotia
sculptor John Greer. The monument consists of a steel arch decorated with two
10-foot bronze feathers on a platform of granite, with two granite benches,
and resembles an outdoor room where people can feel "secure and
contemplative."

Animal-to-human transplantation: Last chance to have your say
The Canadian Public Health Association is consulting with Canadians on
whether Canada should proceed with xenotransplantation and if so, under
what circumstances. (By xenotransplantation we mean the transfer of living
organs, cells or tissues from animals to humans for medical purposes.) The
deadline for feedback is July 31, 2001. If you have not yet done so, we
encourage you and your colleagues to have your say on this important issue.
There is a severe shortage of organs, cells and tissues for human-to-human
transplantation and xenotransplantation could potentially provide an almost
unlimited source. The procedure, however, raises a number of issues.

Bangkok Conference on Biotechnology Opened with Calls to Respect Consumers'
and Farmers' Rights
The three-day international conference on "New Biotechnology Food and
Crops: Science, Safety and Society" got under way from July 10th to 12th in
Bangkok with a call to respect the rights of consumers and the needs of
farmers in developing countries in the face of spreading use of new
technologies in agriculture. A draft report can be consulted at the

Un monument dedie a l'aide humanitaire et a la memoire d'un ami de la SCSI
Le Canada a maintenant un monument dedie a l'aide humanitaire et au
developpement international et, en particulier, a la memoire des Canadiens
qui sont morts a la poursuite de cet ideal.
Situe devant le Pavillon Canada-Monde du Parc des Chutes Rideau a Ottawa,
le monument a ete inaugure par la gouverneure-generale, Adrienne Clarkson,
lors d'une ceremonie emouvante, par une chaude apres-midi de juin. Intitule
< Reflexion >, il a ete concu par le sculpteur John Greer, de la
Nouvelle-Ecosse, a l'issue d'un concours pan-canadien. Il se compose d'une
arche en acier decoree de deux feuilles de bronze de 10 pieds de long et
posee sur une plate-forme en granite, et de deux bancs en granite;
l'ensemble evoque un lieu de recueillement.

La transplantation de l'animal a l'humain : derniere occasion de vous
faire entendre
L'Association canadienne de sante publique mene une consultation aupres des
Canadiennes et Canadiens a savoir si le Canada devrait autoriser la
xenotransplantation, et, le cas echeant, sous quelles, conditions ? (Par
xenotransplantation, on entend la transplantation d'organes, de cellules ou
de tissus vivants de l'animal a l'etre humain a des fins medicales.) La
date limite pour la participation a la consultation est le 31 juillet 2001.
Nous vous encourageons, ainsi que vos collegues, a vous faire entendre (si
ce n'est pas deje fait) sur cet enjeu d'envergure.
Il existe une grave penurie d'organes, de cellules et de tissus destines a
la transplantation de l'humain a l'humain. La xenotransplantation pourrait
potentiellement constituer une source presque illimitee d'organes, de
cellules et de tissus. Toutefois, ce type d'intervention souleve de

La Conference de Bangkok sur la Biotechnologie s'est ouverte sur un appel
au respect des consommateurs et des fermiers.
La conference internationale de trois jours sur < Les recoltes et les
nouveaux aliments modifies par biotechnologie : science, securite et
societe >, qui a eu lieu a Bangkok du 10 au 12 juillet dernier, s'est
ouverte sur un appel au respect des consommateurs et des fermiers des pays
en voie de developpement confrontes a la propagation des nouvelles
