Compendium of PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centres in Canada
The Canadian Society for International Health has created a Compendium of PAHO/WHO
Collaborating Centres in Canada. The purpose of this compendium is to encourage
communication between centres. It is available in English, French, and Spanish and can be
obtained directly from CSIH. It is also available online at www.csih.org. The web page also
provides general information on PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centres and lists the requirements
for organizations interested in becoming a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre.

Outbreak of Poliomyelitis in Dominican Republic and Haiti
A current outbreak of poliomyelitis in Dominican Republic and Haiti has raised serious
concerns because the Western Hemisphere has been free of wild poliovirus circulation since
1991, and because the virus identified is an unusual derivative of the Sabin type 1 oral poliovirus
vaccine (OPV), according to Dr. Ciro de Quadros, who directs the Pan American Health
Organization's Division of Vaccines and Immunization.

Call for Proposals: CSIH NetCorps Information Technology Internship Placements
The Canadian Society for International Health, as a member of Industry Canada's NetCorps
Canada International program, is seeking information technology-oriented placements with
recognized health organizations. These could be in such fields as setting up web pages,
setting up and maintaining list serves and discussion groups, and networking among partners.
We would appreciate knowing by January 12, 2000, if you would like to host one or more
interns for six to nine months. Placements would start on or after April 2001 and must be
completed by March 2002.

"Life-Saving" Scientific Information Boost via Internet to Health Researchers in Africa, Central
Asia and Eastern Europe

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Open Society Institute (OSI), a part of the
Soros Foundation network, have teamed up with leading information providers ISIO and
SilverPlatter and other public and private partners to provide access to high quality scientific
information, via the Internet, to research centres in countries in Africa, Central Asia and
Eastern Europe. Discussions are also under way with Elsevier Science to join the initiative.

Rain Fears as Malaria Epidemic Hits Burundi

A malaria epidemic that has already affected an estimated 276,000 people in the northern
highland districts of Burundi could affect hundreds of thousands more with the imminent rainy
season, the Roll Back Malaria (RBM) secretariat at the World Health Organization (WHO)
warns.

collaboration OPS/OMS au Canada dans le but de faciliter et d'encourager les echanges entre
centres. Il est disponible en francais, anglais et espagnol. Vous pouvez vous le procurer
directement aupres de la SCSI. Vous pouvez egalement le consulter en ligne a l'adresse
www.csih.org/index_f.html. Le site internet offre egalement de l'information generale sur les
Centres de collaboration OPS/OMS permettant ainsi a ceux qui le desirent de s'assurer des

Les pluies menacent d'aggraver l'epidemie de paludisme au Burundi

Une epidemie de paludisme a deja touche quelque 276 000 habitants des hauts plateaux du
nord du Burundi. A l'approche de la saison des pluies, le secretariat de l'initiative de
l'Organisation mondiale de la Sante (OMS) pour Faire Reculer le Paludisme (RBM) sonne
l'alarme: des centaines de milliers de personnes supplementaires pourraient etre affectees.
