Dear Kevin,

This is an important topic. I worked with HVO in Bhutan for 2.5 months
one year ago and had discussions with my accountant as to how I could
receive some tax relief. She stated that the only way you could do this
is if the work you do abroad somehow makes you more marketable in
Canada. I mostly operated on patients there but I did do some basic
patient epidemiology surveys and some specific injury related outcome
studies that I intend to publish in the literature. It was only my
intention to publish material which could in turn advance my
"profitability" (as if) here in Canada that my accountant could make a
case to obtain some tax relief from my volunteer work abroad.

It certainly is an important topic, in particular for people early in
their careers who still have debts but do wish to continue their
international work.

I can try and get more details from my accountant if anyone is
interested in the details.
