Rachel a few weeks ago the CBC show called Passoinate Eye did an amazing
documentary called "Thick and Thin". It is about easting disorder from the
perspective of several women including the film makers. There are a lot of
lessons in the documentary in relation to body image development.

The camera captures several women's stories of people, places and things
important to them. The photographers have woven their stories together to
talk about important issues related to eating disorders and the need for
change within our society. It is quite powerful!

Through the process the film makers discover that their healing is not
complete. There is a lot of pain in the film but also there in an amazing
amount of hope, passion, commitment to change and healing. I thought the
film captures many determinants of health at play and it is a wonderful
teaching and learning tool.

Through dialogue the photographers and the women identify common issues and
themes as well as solutions. The film has the potential to stimulate
thinking, support dialogue and perhaps even social action and change within
Canada and maybe even elsewhere. A good use of our tax dollar indeed. The
women's stories provide evidence for promoting healthy public policy that
goes beyond the medical and behaviourial approaches.

The effects of the show seem very similar to a technique called
"photovoice". For more information on the photovoice technique please see
www.photovoice.com You may be able to get a copy of the film through CBC
www.cbc.ca by following the path to the Passionate Eye.
