"Be a House Detective - How to Protect Young Children from Hazards in the Home"
The County of Lambton - Community Health Services Department has developed a video and guidebook. These resources may be of particular interest to those of you working in the area of injury prevention and are looking for teaching tools. These resources were made possible through the Early Child Development (0-6 years of age) initiative, Population Health Service, Public Health Branch, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term Care.
The video "Be A House Detective! How to Protect Young Children from Hazards in the Home" looks at the most common sources of childhood injuries, and how real families discover real solutions to preventing household injuries. Viewers go on a "House Detective Home Tour" through four rooms (nursery, bathroom, kitchen, living room) Each room features a different family (First Nations, Latin American, African-Canadian and Euro-Canadian), with children ages 0-6. The video is 18 minutes in length.
The accompanying guide can be used as a follow-up to the video, or on its own. It is attractive and user-friendly. Readers are asked to identify the "hazards" in each room, and the "solutions" to the hazards. Answers appear on the flip side of the test page - for immediate reinforcement. The guidebook has 10 pages.
In addition, a PSA "Home Injury Prevention for Young Children" is also available. This 30 second Television Public Service Announcement shows home hazards to young children and that they can be prevented. A billboard at the end, encouraging parents to get more information, can be tailored to provide specific local contact information.
All Public Health Units in Ontario have received copies of the video and guidebook.
