I would venture a guess that the colleague who reported "Mark Twain
had seen a Noh performance in Kyoto" may have seen a reference
that confused Twain's association with Edward House and House's adopted
daughter Koto.

A new biography on House titled _A Yankee in Meiji Japan: The
Crusading Journalist Edward H. House_ by James Huffman was
recently released which according to the publisher:

"...details a deep friendship with Mark Twain, which eventually
was destroyed by a dispute over The Prince and the Pauper.
Twain's unpublished 50-page manuscript on the experience,
_Concerning the Scoundrel E. H. House_, is introduced here for
the first time."
