PAHO WILL RECEIVE 200,000 CANADIAN DOLLARS FOR ASSISTANCE TO EL SALVADOR
----------------------------------
Washington, DC, 2 March 2001(PAHO) - The Canadian International Development
Agency (CIDA) will deliver a grant of 200.000 Canadian dollars to the Pan
American Health Organization (PAHO), in response to the request for
humanitarian assistance for El Salvador's earthquake victims.
Dr. George Alleyne, Director of PAHO, accepted the donation on behalf of
the organization and expressed its gratitude to CIDA for its prompt
response to PAHO's request to aid El Salvador, after the January 13th, 2001
earthquake. Dr. Alleyne is in El Salvador today to visit areas affected by
earthquakes and "to see if there is anything more that the Organization can
do to support El Salvador in its recovery."
Dr. Alleyne said, "My message is that it is necessary to sustain interest
in reconstruction of the country and not to forget El Salvador after the
emergency stage finishes. There are going to be major needs in the medium
and long term, and I want to see if we can strengthen the resources
directed to the country in its new situation."
The donation, which will be administered according to PAHO's rules and
regulations, is destined to help finance several PAHO projects for recovery
of the areas most affected by the earthquake in El Salvador.
In its appeal for help, PAHO requested assistance in six large areas:
medical supplies; experts and equipment for water and sanitation;
epidemiological surveillance and control of diarrheal diseases; support for
management of humanitarian supplies; hospital safety; and mental health and
health communications.
When the projects with funds donated by CIDA are concluded, PAHO will
present a comprehensive final report outlining how it has utilized the
grant, the results achieved and the lessons and experiences learned during
this collaborative effort in assistance of El Salvador.
The Pan American Health Organization responded immediately to the disaster
when it occurred in El Salvador, mobilizing personnel to support activities
in the areas of disasters, vulnerability of structures, hospital
evaluation, the SUMA humanitarian supply management system, mental health,
environmental health, information and data analysis, and mass
communication. The Organization mobilized staff from its Headquarters in
Washington and its country offices in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, the
Dominican Republic, Honduras and Bolivia, and from Collaborating Centers in
Peru and Chile.
PAHO, which serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World
Health Organization, has been working since 1902s with all the countries of
the Americas to improve the health and raise the living standards of their
peoples.

PAHO DIRECTOR VISITS EL SALVADOR TO SUPPORT RECOVERY
-------------------
Washington, 28 February 2001 --- Dr. George Alleyne, Director of the Pan
American Health Organization, arrives in El Salvador March 1 to visit areas
affected by earthquakes and "to see if there is anything more that the
Organization can do to support El Salvador in its recovery."
In an interview before leaving for El Salvador, where he will meet with
Health Minister Dr. Jose Francisco Lopez Beltran, Dr. Alleyne said, "My
message is that it is necessary to sustain interest in reconstruction of
the country and not to forget El Salvador after the emergency stage
finishes. There are going to be major needs in the medium and long term,
and I want to see if we can strengthen the resources directed to the
country in its new situation."
"The needs of El Salvador are so vast that what we can offer in financial
terms is only a drop in the bucket," said Dr. Alleyne, "but we can help
prepare projects for the social sector, and continue to work at local level
to support the recovery and reconstruction."
"My fear is that when the humanitarian aspect recedes people will forget
the large needs that El Salvador will have for a long, long time", he
added.
Dr. Alleyne will visit Santa Tecla and La Libertad, and on Friday March 2,
he will hold a press conference at 12:30 in the PAHO office in San
Salvador.
PAHO personnel were mobilized from its Headquarters in
Washington and its country offices in Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, the
Dominican Republic, Honduras and Bolivia, and from Collaborating Centers in
Peru and Chile.
PAHO also issued a new appeal for $5.6 million in humanitarian assistance
to meet emergency health sector needs of El Salvador on 16 February, in
response to the second earthquake of 13 February. The new appeal reflected
the new emergency and included medium-term needs such as ensuring the
rehabilitation of the water systems and health facilities. The impact of
both earthquakes caused damages to important sanitary infrastructures and
hindered the process of providing adequate health services, drinking water
and sanitation to the large number of people displaced in the shelters.

 Help make the difference
World Water Day 2001 - 22 March
---------------
Water and health are inter-twined in many ways and it is important to
address the increasing need for adequate and safe water to protect both
people and the planet. Water is one of the earth's most precious and
threatened resources. Health is one of each person's most precious
resources. We need to protect and enhance them both.
22 March is a unique occasion to remind everybody that solutions are
possible, and that key tools to this aim are strengthened participation and
global co-operation. Concrete efforts to provide clean drinking water and
improve health as well as to increase awareness world-wide of the problems
and of the solutions, can help us make the difference. Our task is to turn
words into political commitment and action.

 March 24, 2001 - World TB Day 2001
Theme: 'DOTS - TB cure for All'
---------------
"We have heard Ministers agree that no one should be denied access to DOTS.
This means that DOTS should be available to all who need it, wherever they
live, whether they are young or old, man or woman, homeless or housed,
jailed or free."

Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland, Director-General, World Health Organization
The theme for World TB Day 2001, 'DOTS - TB cure for All', calls for
equitable access to TB services for anyone who has TB, free from
discrimination - rich or poor, man or woman, adult or child, imprisoned of
free, and including other vulnerable groups such as people with HIV or drug
resistant TB.
TB cure for all contributes to the fulfillment of everyone's right to the
enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health.
