Registered Nurse Position available for a demonstration project to
promote cervical and breast cancer screening among homeless women

Project Background: Homeless women face many barriers to obtaining
health care. We are seeking nursing staff for an innovative demonstration
project whose goal is to improve breast cancer and cervical cancer
screening in this population. The Inner City Health Research Unit
at St. Michael’s Hospital is conducting this project in partnership
with a number of community agencies in central and southeast Toronto.
The project will provide primary nursing care (general health care,
cancer screening, and health education) at drop-in centers serving
homeless and marginally housed women.

Job Description: The registered nurse will work in collaboration
with staff at drop-in centers to provide front-line health care to
homeless and marginally housed women in a challenging and non-traditional
environment. Essential qualifications include experience in providing
community-based primary care, the ability to function independently
(with off-site physician back-up), adaptability and strong team skills,
and the ability to build relationships of trust and respect with
disadvantaged women of diverse backgrounds. Applicants must be registered
with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Experience in breast and cervical
cancer screening is mandatory. Qualification as an RN(EC) would be
a significant asset. No research experience is required.
