Responding to the pressing need for graduates equipped with the knowledge,
skills, and critical perspectives necessary to play decision making and
leadership roles in our increasingly complex and dynamic health care sector,
Atkinson is pleased to announce the launch of a new School of Health Policy and
Management.

The School houses three innovative major programs -- Health Policy, Health
Management, and Health Informatics -- all leading to a Specialized Honours,
Bachelor of Health Studies (BHS).

An integral element of all three Bachelor of Health Studies programs is the
optional co-op placement that provides students with paid experience in a health
related field in either three or four month blocks during the summer session
(May


? July or May - Aug). Health Policy     The Health Policy major is designed to equip graduates with the analytical framework and tools that will enable them to participate effectively in policy research, development, and implementation at all levels in the health care system. Graduates will gain the ability to critically analyze all aspects of health and healthy public policy. The career options associated with the program are Health Policy Analyst, Planner, Researcher, Health Care Advocate, among others. Health Management     The Health Management major is constructed around a core business administration curriculum supplemented by a range of state-of-the-art health management courses to prepare graduates to run complex, multidisciplinary health care programs and enterprises. This program will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to operate effectively in community and institutional settings, as well as within a variety of service delivery models. The career options associated with the program are Health Administrator, Health Systems Planner and/or Analyst, among others. Health Informatics    The Health Informatics major emphasizes the acquisition and application of information and communication technology in the public, private and commercial sectors. Graduates will be equipped to work with the various major health informatics stakeholders: consumers, application developers, clinicians, policymakers, and health care and public health organizations. Students will be able to deal with health informatics issues such as privacy, ethics, confidentiality, security and research and evaluation. The career options associated with the program are Health Information Specialist, Systems Designer, Information Technology Transfer Coordinator Health Information Policy and Planning Coordinator, and Systems Integration Specialist.                                                    Please turn over                             Summer Co-Op Placements      Co-op placements are important parts of the Health Policy, Health Management, and Health Informatics programs. Their overall objective is to provide students with paid experience in organizations, agencies, or businesses related to their program of study. They also offer a chance for students to explore the kinds of jobs that students may take up upon completion of their degree program.      Placements can be of 12 or 16 weeks duration. It is to be a full time employment situation by which students are paid from $10 - $15 an hour for a full 35 hour week.
