Canadian Embassy in Turkey Requests Medical Equipment to
Assist Azerbaijan
--------------------------------------------------------
The Canadian Society for International Health has
received a request from the Canadian Embassy in Turkey
to assist Azerbaijan in obtaining hospital equipment for
the war-torn region of Fizuli. The region's hospital in
Horadiz has been reconstructed with funding from the
United Nations Development Programme however, the
equipment necessary to run the hospital must be obtained
from another donor. The list of necessary equipment
includes hospital beds, electrocardiographs, an
operating table, surgical and laboratory equipment, as
well as office equipment. The complete list is
available from CSIH. We ask that members able to assist
in any way in this important health and development
matter contact Eva Slawecki at the Society immediately.

Call For Cooperation: Health and Development in Border
Areas Global Initiative
--------------------------------------------------------
The WHO Collaborating Center for Border and Rural Health
at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center has
launched "Health and Development in Border Areas Global
Initiative" which was adopted by WHO global Advisory
Committee for Health Research in October 1996. A study
was recently started on the Canadian-US borders (75 km
on each side) for causal association between "the
borders" and infectious diseases, environmental hazards,
and medical care.
Health in border areas has been a universally neglected
issue. Recently, there has been some progress in policy
analysis regarding health needs.
If you wish to be involved in this initiative, please
contact Wadie Kamel at WHO Collaborating Center for
Border and Rural Health, University of Arizona Health
Sciences Center, 6602 South Dorsey Lane, Tempe, Arizona,
