CIDA Awards Program for Canadians / Programme bourses de
l'ACDI a l'intention des Canadiens et Canadiennes

The CIDA Awards Program is for Canadian citizens who
would like to participate in international development
through a volunteer project of their own initiative.
The project is to be carried out in collaboration with
an organization in a country eligible under Canada's
Official Development Assistance (ODA) Program and must
address a specific field of endeavor within CIDA's Aid
Policy. In 1998, the program offers awards of up to
$15,000 each in two categories: Innovative Research
Awards - for Master's level students to undertake field
research related to their thesis or program; and
Professional Leadership Awards - for individuals with
professional experience who wish to undertake a
volunteer research or service project in international
development.

http://www.cbie.ca. Copies of the application kits
should be available on university and college campuses.
The 1998 competition is now underway and applications
will be accepted until April 30. Please direct

Le Programme de bourses de l'ACDI est destine aux
citoyens canadiens qui desirent participer au
developpement international par le biais d'un projet
benevole elabore sur leur propre initiative. Tout projet
doit etre realise en collaboration avec un organisme
dans un pays admissible au Programme canadien d'aide
publique au developpement (APD) et doit interesser un
secteur d'activite prevu dans la politique d'aide de
l'ACDI. En 1998, le programme offre des bourses d'une
valeur maximale de 15 000 $ dans deux categories :
Bourses pour la recherche novatrice - devant permettre
aux etudiants du 2 cycle (maîtrise) d'effectuer des
recherches sur le terrain dans le cadre de leur these ou
programme d'etudes; et Bourses pour le developpement du
leadership professionnel - destinees a des particuliers
possedant une experience professionnelle et souhaitant
realiser un projet de recherches ou de travaux
interessant le developpement international.

McGill University Annual Summer Programme in
Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Offered May 4 - June 26, 1998 under the aegis of the
1998 Montreal Summer School in Public Health McGill
University / Universite de Montreal / DSP de Montreal-
Centre / International Committee of the Red Cross /
CEPIQ.
The programme is intended for clinicians, health
professionals and for graduate students specializing in
epidemiology and/or biostatistics. Students may take
courses for Academic credit OR professional interest.
CME Units, fully accredited by CACMS and ACCE, are
available. Four-week and one-week courses are offered.
The 1998 Summer Programme will offer courses in
epidemiology; clinical epidemiology; inferential
statistics; multivariable analysis; protocol
development; and health care technology assessment.
Substantive courses will also be offered in cancer,
cardiovascular and respiratory epidemiology; health in
developing countries; psychosocial factors affecting
medical conditions; and mother and child health. In
addition, specialization in pharmacoepidemiology is
available in the form of 4 consecutive courses of 1 week

Salary Information: Basic Salary: $49,523 at single
rate; Post Adjustment: $9,607 at single rate
Minimum Requirements: Education: A doctoral
qualification, (PhD, DrPH or MD) with a postgraduate
degree to at least the master's level in a field related
to noncommunicable diseases, including injuries and
their determinants (violence and other risk factors).
Experience: At national level: Seven years experience
in the development and direction of prevention and
control programs including public health interventions
based on epidemiological, biostatistical, social,
behavioral and related public health sciences. At
international level: Two years of experience in
providing international technical cooperation in the
field of health promotion, prevention, and control of
noncommunicable diseases and research, with an emphasis
on injuries and violence. Languages: Very good
knowledge of English or Spanish with a working knowledge
of the other.

Save the Children Seeks Area Director for NIS

The NIS Area Director(AD) is the senior leadership
position for Save the Children's programs in the former
Soviet Union including Tajikistan, Armenia, Georgia,
Azerbaijan and Russia. He/she is responsible for long
range strategic planning, overall programmatic direction
and managerial oversight of all programs and operations
within the defined geographic region.
REQUIREMENTS: M.S./M.A. in international development or
a related field. At least five years' experience in
planning and managing development projects in the
developing world, preferably with NGOs. Several years
experience as NGO Country Director, with experience
managing personnel and budgets. Fundraising experience,
excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building
skills. Experience in NIS region and Russian language
