Teenage pregnancies workshop

More than 15 million young women aged 15 to 19 give birth every year,
accounting for more than 10 percent of all babies born worldwide. Teenage
pregnancies pose a serious health problem for both the young mother and the
infant, leading to higher rates of maternal mortality, pregnancy-related
complications and low birth-weight babies. The outcome of these pregnancies
can be devastating - physical and cognitive problems for the child and
social, emotional and economic difficulties for the mother.

While a global concern, the issues surrounding teenage pregnancy vary
drastically between countries and regions. A teenage pregnancies workshop,
to be held in conjunction with the International Federation of Medical
Students Associations' General Assembly in August 2001, will examine the
specific issues surrounding teenage pregnancy in four regions of the world.
Participants will then have the opportunity to create concrete plans of
action to address these concerns. If you would like more information on
this workshop, please contact international coordinator Kathryn Andrusky,
National Officer on Reproductive Health for the Canadian Federation of
Medical Students at mailto:[log in to unmask]

Productive Water Points in Dryland Areas, Guidelines on integrated
planning for rural water supply by Chris Lovell, ISBN 1853395161, 2001,
240pp. In Canada: Renouf Publications http://www.renoufbooks.com/ Other
countries: www.itdgpublishing.org.uk

This book shows how research in Southern Africa has shed light on why
conventional wells and boreholes fail, on the potential of the groundwater
resource to support production through improved siting and selection of
more appropriate well designs, and on the positive impacts and some
problems that can emerge at productive water points. The findings are
presented in a practical manner to encourage planners and practitioners in
rural water supply to consider developing productive water points in
drought-prone areas.

Hygiene Promotion, A practical manual for relief and development, Suzanne
Ferron, Joy Morgan and Marion O'Reilly, ISBN 1853395056, 2000, 258pp. In
Canada: Renouf Publications http://www.renoufbooks.com/ Other countries:
www.itdgpublishing.org.uk

This practical manual fills a gap in the current literature by providing
guidance on hygiene promotion in emergency settings. It is written
particularly for fieldworkers on projects or programmes aiming to reduce
the incidence of water- and sanitation-related diseases. It will also be
useful for other relief and development workers, particularly those working
in the fields of community development, health and engineering. The authors
describe a wide range of approaches to hygiene promotion that can be used
in different settings. The authors stress the need for a form of hygiene
promotion that fosters capacity-building rather than the provision of
information alone.

Productive Water Points in Dryland Areas, (Anglais seulement) Guidelines
on integrated planning for rural water supply by Chris Lovell, ISBN
1853395161, 2001, 240pp. Au Canada : Renouf Publications
http://www.renoufbooks.com/ Autres pays : www.itdgpublishing.org.uk

1853395056, 2000, 258pp. In Canada: Renouf Publications
http://www.renoufbooks.com/ Other countries: www.itdgpublishing.org.uk
