New Campaign Unveiled on World No-Tobacco Day

The City of Ottawa and the Ottawa-Carleton Council
on Smoking and Health gathered on May 31, 2001, at Biagio's Italian Kitchen to
celebrate World No-Tobacco Day. The aim of World No-Tobacco Day, this year,
is two-fold: first, to stimulate real actions at the local level and
second, to generate international and local attention to the serious issue
of second-hand smoke.

Janet Hatcher-Roberts, the Executive Director of the Canadian Society for
International Health, praised Ottawa's new smoke-free by-laws which
illustrate the theme of World No-Tobacco Day in a concrete way. "We
congratulate those who have worked so diligently in bringing this important
health issue forward. The citizens of Ottawa will now be protected from
second-hand smoke in an unprecedented way."

Dr. Robert Cushman, Ottawa Medical Officer of Health, took this opportunity
to unveil a community awareness campaign entitled "A Smoke-Free Experience
begins August 1st. "Our City Council had the courage to pass a progressive
and fair by-law that will become the standard for other cities of North
America," stated Dr. Cushman. "That is what the public wants, what it
deserves and what it will soon enjoy."
