 PAHO Appeals for $605,000 in Emergency Health Assistance for Peru in
Aftermath of Earthquake

Washington, June 26, 2001 (PAHO) -- The Pan American Health Organization is
appealing for $605,000 to reduce the health consequences of the earthquake
that struck southern Peru June 23, and to provide emergency relief to the
affected populations.

The Pan American Health and Education Foundation has set up a gift fund for
Peru earthquake relief, which is accepting donations and pledges. Donors
can make tax-deductible contributions by cash, cheque or credit card by
calling the Foundation's gift line toll free at 1-800-996-2970. Callers
outside the U.S. may reach the gift line by calling 202-974-3800.

PAHO Working with Peru in Earthquake Response

PAHO is working closely with authorities in Peru in response to the major
earthquake that shook southern Peru and northern Chile, leaving some 70
dead, 1,200 injured, and some 10,000 homeless. PAHO disaster experts from
its Ecuador office arrived in Peru Sunday and are supporting Ministry of
Health and Civil Defence authorities in assessing immediate needs,
evaluating damages, and providing health services to affected populations.

A Prestigious New Research Program for Prominent Scholars and Professionals

(Application Deadline is August 1, 2001) As one of the oldest and largest
international exchange programs in the world, the Fulbright Scholar Program
is in a unique position to respond to the opportunities ushered in by a new
century in which the nations and citizens of the world are increasingly
interdependent. Its worldwide design and its long-standing international
relationships represent a natural platform upon which to build new, global
models for collaborative thinking among scholars of many different
nationalities about the challenges and possibilities for humankind in the
21st century.

In this spirit, The Fulbright New Century Scholars Program will bring
together annually over the next three years 25-30 outstanding research
scholars and professionals from the U.S. and around the world to engage in
multidisciplinary collaboration of the highest quality on a topic of
substantial global significance. For the academic year 2001-2002, the
research focus will be "Challenges of Health in a Borderless World."
Probable themes for the following two years of the program will be
"Addressing Sectarian, Ethnic and Cultural Conflict within and across
National Borders" and "Managing Natural Resources in the New Millennium:
Transboundary Water Issues."

The Association of Canadian Medical Colleges is working collaboratively
with other professional organizations in dentistry, nursing, psychology and
social work to identify the challenges and opportunities to implementing
interdisciplinary education in HIV/AIDS. It is the intent of this website

implementing and evaluating interdisciplinary education, including
successes and problems.
