Good day,

Recently on the CLICK4HP, some participants have mentioned wanting to get
invovled in concrete actions. For those wanting to make an impact on two
key determinants of health ~ income and housing ~ here is something
practical you can do:

Subject: pay the rent and feed the kids postcard campaign

Join the Pay the Rent and Feed the Kids Campaign!

The Pay the Rent and Feed the Kids campaign is working to put social
assistance and housing issues on the political agenda. In Toronto,
coalition partners are challenging the provincial government to:

*Raise the shelter allowance portion of Ontario Works and Ontario
Disability
Support Program to average rent levels.
*Return the basic needs portion of these benefits to 1994 levels (pre-cut
levels)
*Index social assistance benefits to the cost of living
  *Reinstate rent control
*Expand rent-geared-to-income programs that provide affordable housing

For groups: Pick-up a Campaign and Postcard Kit at the Community Social
Planning Council of Toronto, 2 Carlton Street, Suite 1001 or contact Beth
Wilson at CSPC, (416) 351-0095 x257, [log in to unmask]
Postcards demonstrate the inadequacy of welfare rates and call on Ernie Eves
to take
action. We are collecting hundreds of postcards for a media event to take
place in March. Deadline for postcard collection: February 28.

For individuals: Fill out a postcard at the Community Social Planning
Council of Toronto, 2 Carlton Street, Suite 1001 or at other coalition
partner locations.

To join one of the campaign’s subcommittees (mobilization, lobby, policy,
public awareness) or for more information about the campaign, contact Low
Income Families Together at 416-597-9400, www.paytherent.ca or
