"CRISIS IN SHANGRILA:
UNDERSTANDING POLITICAL UNREST IN NEPAL"
A one-day roundtable featuring Nepali journalist Deepak Thapa

Friday, June 22

Room 308, West Block
Parliament Hill
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Lunch will be provided

Brutal guerrilla insurgency and scores of extra-judicial killings by police
are undermining the once peaceful reputation of Nepal. This "war" between
so-called Maoists and the Nepal government is affecting local people's
lives severely. Hundreds of villagers have been internally displaced and
the day-to-day livelihood of thousands more has been affected. This is also
taking its toll in the development arena-several local and international
NGOs, including Canadian, have already stopped working in the affected
areas, fearing for the safety of their staff.
The roundtable "Crisis in Shangrila: Understanding Political Unrest in
Nepal" provides a unique opportunity to learn about and assess this
volatile situation. Participants from government, development agencies, and
the Nepali community in Canada will discuss how they and others can support
Nepali peace efforts, and how Canada should approach the issue.
Headlining the event is well-known journalist and researcher Deepak Thapa,
who will present his research findings on the Maoist insurgency, which
resulted in an article titled "The Killing Terraces of Nepal," published as
the May 2001 cover story for Himal South Asia magazine. Also presenting at
the roundtable will be speakers from government and development
organizations, along with representatives from Nepali agencies (by phone).
Thapa's research, the roundtable and his Canadian tour are supported as
part of SAP's current project on "Understanding Political Unrest in Nepal,"
developed in collaboration with SAP Nepal and Himal, and supported by World
Accord and the Leger Foundation. SAP Canada's program is supported by the
Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
