Hi Karly,

As you know, public health units are doing a lot of
work in injury prevention. For more info, please
see APN's annual directory of injury
and substance abuse prevention contacts in
public health available online at
http://www.apolnet.org/resources/res_apn.html.
Sections 2-3 are particularly recommended.

In terms of what else is being done, I believe
Dr. Vicky Scott at the University of Victoria was compiling
inventory of policy and program initiatives for fall
prevention in the community. She can be
reached at [log in to unmask], Phone: 250 - 721-7959,
fax: 250 - 721-6499.

I seem to recall something on CBC radio this
am about a falls prevention conference in BC. I did
a little searching and came up with the conference
program: http://www.aimnet.bc.ca/expand.pdf.

Hope this helps.

Paula

Subject: Fall prevention campaigns and seniors

Hello everyone,

My name is Karly Holmes. I am in the process of researching fall
prevention programs aimed at seniors, veterans and their caregivers.

The Ontario Public Health Association and Partners for Seniors - Falls
Prevention Program have been funded to create a network of parties
interested in fall prevention in Ontario, and to build on the programs
currently underway with a public awareness campaign. Very few people are
aware of the fact that the cost associated with falls in Canada is more
than twice that incurred due to motor vehicle crashes. We aim to change
that.

We are looking to identifying materials for effective public awareness
programs on falls prevention, as well as key messages and channels for
dissemination. We are looking for programs established in Canada and
abroad. If you have information relating to a fall prevention program in
your community, please visit the link below to share your information
and your experiences on fall prevention campaigns.

Thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge and experiences.

Cheers,

Karly
