Course to Cover Geographic Information Systems in Epidemiology and Public
Health
As part of the 2001 Graduate Summer Institute of Epidemiology and
Biostatistics, PAHO's Special Program for Health Analysis and the Johns

Equity and Health: View from the Pan American Sanitary Bureau
The concept of equity has emerged as a primary guiding principle for the
work of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau. The Bureau has been gathering
information on and examining issues related to disparities in health in the
Americas, especially as they relate to socioeconomic factors. The authors
have attempted to show how equity and the insights it yields into the
distribution of health can underpin the Bureau's work at the operational

Juvenile Violence in the Americas: Innovative Studies in Research,
Diagnosis and Prevention
This book, briefly discusses several published works on violence among
children and adolescents. It also presents a theoretical model that
identifies the factors and processes that lead to violence or follow from
it as a frame of reference for understanding how to prevent this
phenomenon. Based on the model's components, the study reviews research on
violence prevention in families, schools, and communicities. Finally, it
issues recommendations for future action to reduce violence by and against

The Legislative and Policy Environment for Adolescent Health in Latin
America and the Caribbean
This book examines the legislative and executive environment for adolescent
health in Latin America and the Caribbean. It presents the results of a

results are offered as tools to facilitate advocacy, research, and policy
development and to strengthen education and services aimed at ensuring
health protection and promotion, thus fostering socioeconomic development

Obesity and Poverty: A New Public Health Challenge

Overseas internships available for young health professionals and
information technology specialists interested in public health
The International Health Youth Internships program of CSIH currently has a
number of overseas internships available for young health professionals and
information technology specialists interested in public health. Candidates
must be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants, under 30 and have finished their
studies. Apply as soon as possible as positions are being filled now for start dates

Recognition of CSIH Partners in Health Project at the new Canada and the
World Pavilion in Ottawa
Thanks to their connections with the Partners in Health Ukraine project,
Canadian Society for International Health's (CSIH) staff Paulette
Schatz and Annie Gingras were invited to a ceremony to mark the opening of
the Canada and the World Pavilion in Ottawa on May 9, 2001. The Prime
Minister, the Hon. Sheila Copps and many others provided the opening
remarks.
In 1995, the National Capital Commission launched a pilot project to
celebrate Canada's achievements and role on the international scene.
Following its success, plans were developed for a permanent centre. The new
12,000-square-foot Canada and the World Pavilion houses a permanent main
exhibit and a Discovery Room, with interactive hands-on displays.
The main exhibit, which takes up the largest space in the Pavilion,
provides visitors with a guided exploration of Canada's international
involvement through three theme areas: Spirit (Artistry and Sports), Heart
(International Cooperation) and Mind (Innovations in Science and
Technology).
In the Heart section, CSIH's project work with over 300,000 nurses in
Ukraine and the start-up of the Ukrainian Nurses Association is featured.
The Canadian Society for International Health thanks all who supported and
participated in the Partners In Health Ukraine nursing project.
The exhibition is opened until September 30, and the address is 50 Sussex
Drive, at Rideau Falls Park, in Ottawa. The Pavilion provides an
opportunity for Canadians and visitors from around the world to discover
that Canada, despite its small population, has a big impact on the world
scene in a variety of fields.

Consultation on CIDA's Draft Action Plan on Health and Nutrition
CIDA is strengthening its programming in health, nutrition, water and
sanitation over the next five years as part of its new focus on social
development. The draft health and nutrition action plan presents CIDA's
response to the global challenges of health, nutrition, water and
sanitation. To make a real impact on the health and nutrition of the
world's poorest people, CIDA must make strategic decisions about its future
work.
Because discussion and debate are both welcome and crucially needed, we are
inviting you to participate in the current online consultation of the
health and nutrition action plan scheduled until Thursday, June 14, 2001.
The consultation is intended to be as broad as possible, and is designed to
seek comments and analysis from CIDA's domestic and international partners.
Please pass this message along to others you think might be interested in
participating in the online consultation process.
To facilitate discussion on the draft action plan, the moderator will pose
a question at the start of each week. Your comments will be forwarded via
e-mail to the moderator of the discussion, who will review and post
messages in the consultation archive to share with other participants.

Public Consultation on Xenotransplantation
Xenotransplantation is a controversial procedure that could potentially
save many human lives. The Canadian Public Health Association has been
funded by Health Canada to form a Public Advisory Group and carry out a
public consultation on xenotransplantation. Xenotransplantation is the
transfer of living organs, cells or tissues from animals to humans for
medical purposes. Xenotransplantation raises a number of issues that call
for informed public discussion.
The views of Canadians are being sought through a consultation web site
http://www.xeno.cpha.ca, questionnaires that are being mailed to a wide
variety of organizations, a public opinion survey, and citizen forums that
are being held in six regions of the country. The Public Advisory Group
will submit its recommendations on xenotransplantation to Health Canada
based on this input from Canadians. The report is expected to be completed
before the end of the year.
The fourth Citizen Forum on Xenotransplantation will take place in Toronto,
Ontario, May 26-27, 2001. A random invitation has been sent to 2500
households in the Toronto area. Twenty panelists will be selected to
participate in discussions on xenotransplantation and make recommendations
to Health Canada.
The general public is invited to attend an open session on Saturday, May
26, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., at the Toronto Marriott Eaton Centre, 525 Bay
Street. The public will have an opportunity to share opinions on
xenotransplantation and ask questions of a panel of experts.
The next and last forums will take place in Quebec, on June 8-9, and in
Yellowknife, on July 4-6, 2001.
If you are interested in participating in the forum, please join CPHA in
Toronto on May 26.

Reconnaissance du programme Partenaires en Sante de la SCSI au nouveau
Pavillon Canada-Monde a Ottawa
En remerciement de leur implication dans le projet Partenaires en Sante
Canada-Ukraine, Paulette Schatz et Annie Gingras, de la Societe canadienne de
sante internationale (SCSI), ont ete invitees a participer a l'inauguration
du Pavillon Canada-Monde le 9 mai 2001 a Ottawa. Les principaux orateurs
ont ete le premier ministre du Canada et l'honorable Sheila Copps; de
nombreuses autres personnalites etaient presentes.
En 1995, la Commission de la capitale nationale a lance un projet pilote
pour souligner les realisations et le role du Canada sur la scene
internationale. Devant le succes rencontre, un plan fut elabore pour
l'etablissement d'un centre permanent. Le nouveau Pavillon Canada-Monde de
339 metres carres, renferme une exposition principale et une salle de
decouverte avec des elements d'exposition interactifs.
L'exposition principale, qui represente la plus grande surface du batiment,
souligne l'implication du Canada sur la scene internationale par le biais
de trois themes : l'ame, soit les arts et le sport, le coeur, soit la
cooperation internationale, et l'esprit, c'est-a-dire les innovations
scientifiques et techniques.
Dans la section du coeur, le travail de la SCSI avec plus de 300 000
infirmieres en Ukraine et le demarrage de l'Association des infirmieres
ukrainiennes est represente. La Societe canadienne de sante internationale
remercie tous ceux qui ont soutenu et participe au projet des Infirmieres
ukrainiennes de Partenaires en Sante.
L'exposition est ouverte jusqu'au 30 septembre, et le Pavillon est situe au
50 Promenade Sussex, dans le parc des Chutes-Rideau, a Ottawa. Le Pavillon
Canada-Monde permet aux Canadiens et aux visiteurs etrangers de constater
que, malgre leur petit nombre, les habitants de ce pays jouent un role
important sur la scene internationale dans tous les secteurs d'activites.

Consultation sur l'Ebauche du Plan d'action de l'ACDI sur la sante et la

L'ACDI renforcera ses programmes en matiere de sante, de nutrition,
d'approvisionnement en eau et d'hygiene au cours des cinq prochaines annees
dans le cadre de ses nouvelles priorites de developpement social. L'ebauche
du Plan d'action sur la sante et la nutrition fait connaitre les positions
de l'ACDI au regard des defis mondiaux concernant la sante, la nutrition,
l'approvisionnement en eau et l'hygiene. Pour agir effectivement sur la
sante et la nutrition des plus demunis de la planete, l'ACDI doit prendre
des decisions strategiques a l'egard de ses futurs projets.

Consultation publique sur la xenotransplantation
La xenotransplantation est une procedure controversee qui pourrait sauver de
nombreuses vies humaines. L'Association canadienne de sante publique a ete
mandatee par Sante Canada pour consulter le public canadien au sujet des
questions d'ordres ethique, juridique, social, economique et sanitaire en
rapport avec la xenotransplantation. Par xenotransplantation, on entend
l'utilisation chez l'etre humain de cellules, de tissus et d'organes
vivants non humains.
L'opinion des Canadiens est sollicitee au moyen d'un site de consultation
sur internet http://www.xeno.cpha.ca, de questionnaires envoyes a une
grande variete d'organismes, d'un sondage d'opinion publique, et de forums
citoyens tenus dans six regions du pays. Le Groupe de consultation publique
soumettra ses recommandations sur la xenotransplantation a Sante Canada en
se fondant sur les opinions formulees par les Canadiens. Le rapport doit etre
complete d'ici la fin de l'annee.
Le quatrieme Forum citoyen sur la xenotransplantation aura lieu a Toronto
(Ontario) du 26 au 27 mai 2001. Une invitation a ete envoyee a 2500 foyers
de la region de Toronto choisis de facon aleatoire. Vingt conferenciers ont
ete choisis pour participer aux discussion sur la xenotransplantation et
faire leurs recommandations a Sante Canada.
Le grand public est invite a assister a une session le samedi 26 mai de
9h00 a 14h00, au Toronto Marriott Eaton Centre, 525 Bay Street. Le public
pourra echanger ses opinions sur la xenotransplantation et poser des
questions a un panel d'experts.
