Confronting AIDS in the Caribbean details efforts to control AIDS in that

Research Studies Miss Key Information that Could Encourage Longer
Breast-feeding, Improve Child Health
Breast-feeding children for longer periods can improve their health, and
researchers have carried out dozens of studies to promote that practice and
discourage early termination of breast-feeding. Nevertheless, that research
may be overlooking crucial information, according to a research article
published recently in the Pan American Journal of Public Health. For more

Alliance Works for Cervical Cancer Prevention
PAHO and four other international agencies have joined together and formed
the Alliance for Cervical Cancer Prevention. PAHO's efforts focus on

CSIH Internships Still Available
The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) Youth Internships
Program still has internships available for young people with IT skills who
want to work in international health, to start by October 1 and run until
March  2002.

New postings for the Philippines, Ethiopia, South Africa and Chile have
just become available. All job descriptions and information on applying are

FAO to host global meeting to review progress towards ending hunger
At the World Food Summit in 1996, representatives of 185 nations and the
European Community pledged to work towards eradicating hunger. As an
essential first step, they set a target of reducing the number of hungry
people by half by 2015. At this year's World Food Summit: five years later,
participants will review progress made towards that goal and consider ways

CIDA Consultation: Strengthening Aid Effectiveness
CIDA has prepared the document Strengthening Aid Effectiveness: New
Approaches to Canada's International Assistance Program to stimulate ideas
and discussion on ways to enhance the effectiveness of Canada's
international cooperation program.
CIDA is seeking the views of interested partners-including development
experts, educators, non-governmental organizations, and concerned citizens,
both in Canada and overseas-on the directions outlined in the document, as
well as issues related to its implementation.  More information available

WUSC Needs Homestay Hosts
Every year, World University Service of Canada (WUSC) welcomes a group of
students who have come from the developing world to study at various
Canadian colleges and universities. WUSC is currently seeking Homestays for
students arriving in the month of August to help them adapt to the culture
of their new city and country.
The homestay host provides the student with room and board for a period of
7-10 days from August 22-31, 2001. In return, the host receives a $250
honorarium to cover the cost of food and incidentals. During the homestay,
students seek out and secure their accommodations for the upcoming school
year.

Le Programme des jeunes stagiaires de la Socite canadienne de sante
internationale (SCSI) offre encore quelques stages aux jeunes qualifies en
technologie de l'information et desireux de travailler en sante
internationale a partir du 1er octobre jusqu'a mars 2002.
De nouvelles affectations en provenance des Philippines, de l'Ethiopie, de
l'Afrique du Sud et du Chili viennent de s'annoncer. Les descriptions des
postes et les renseignements necessaires a la presentation d'une demande

Examen des progres accomplis pour eliminer la faim
Lors du Sommet mondial de l'alimentation de 1996, des representants de 185
nations et de la Communaute europeenne se sont engages a eradiquer la faim
dans le monde. Leur premiere demarche primordiale a ete de fixer l'objectif
de reduire de moitie le nombre de personnes sous-alimentees d'ici 2015. Au
Sommet mondial de l'alimentation: cinq ans apres (5-9 novembre 2001), les
participants passeront en revue les progres accomplis dans la realisation
de cet objectif et envisageront des moyens d'accelerer le processus.   Pour

d'ameliorer l'efficacite du programme canadien de cooperation
internationale.
L'ACDI aimerait connaitre l'avis de partenaires interesses - experts en
developpement, enseignants, organisations non gouvernementales, citoyens
concernes, du Canada et de l'etranger - sur les orientations presentees
dans ce document, ainsi que sur les questions liees a sa mise en oeuvre.

L'EUMC Recherche des familles hotes
Tous les ans, environ 40 etudiants refugies viennent au Canada par
l'entremise du Programme de parrainage d'etudiants refugies de l'EUMC
(Entraide universitaire mondiale du Canada). Le programme s'adresse aux
etudiants refugies qui souhaitent poursuivre leaus etudes postsecondaires
et s'etablir au Canada a titre d'immigrants recus.   A cet effet, L'EUCM
recherche des familles hotes pour le mois d'aout pour accueillir ces
etudiants et les aider a s'adapter au Canada.
Les familles d'accueil doivent s'engager a recevoir l'etudiant entre sept a
dix jours du 22 au 31 auout, 2001. Durant cette periode, les familles
benevoles devront defrayer les couts de nourriture et des choses fortuites
de l'etudiant.  En retour, la famille recevra $250 pour aider a defrayer
ces couts.  Les etudiants utiliseront cette periode pour trouver un
logement permanent pour l'anner scolaire.
