REMINDER: 2001 CLARENCE H. MOORE AWARD FOR VOLUNTARISM IN HEALTH SERVICES
IN THE AMERICAS
The Pan American Health and Education Foundation, a PAHO partner
organization, is seeking recommendations for the 13th annual Clarence H.
Moore Award. The award, which consists of a certificate and a cash prize of
$2,500, is awarded to a national or local non-governmental or private
voluntary organization, or to individuals associated with them, in
recognition of outstanding contributions in a health area of importance to
the PAHO program of work. The deadline for nominations is August 31.

ANNOUNCEMENT FOR NOMINATIONS FOR CSIH LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD 2001
As in previous years, we are asking you to nominate someone to receive the
Lifetime Achievement Award. This award is given to individuals who have
contributed tirelessly to international health and development over a
sustained period of time. The Award was inaugurated in 1998 by the
Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) to be presented annually
at the Canadian Conference on International Health. The first recipient,
in 1998, was Dr. Pierre Viens, of Quebec City, for his work with the
conference and for his dedication and energy to CSIH in general and
international health specifically. Drs. Elizabeth and Donald Hillman were
worthy recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999, and Dr. Vic
Neufeld in 2000.

CIDA OPENS REGIONAL OFFICE IN EDMONTON, ALBERTA
Maria Minna, Canada's Minister for International Cooperation, today
announced the inauguration of the Canadian International Development
Agency's (CIDA) regional office for the Prairies in Edmonton, Alberta.
The regional office provides a coaching and support role for organizations
wishing to work with CIDA in developing countries. The director of the
regional office, Ruth Shapiro, and CIDA representatives in Saskatchewan and
Manitoba hope to boost awareness, understanding and participation of
regional interest groups in CIDA's programs. For more information, please

DAY

OECD DATA SUGGEST GOVERNMENTS COULD DO MORE TO CURB AVOIDABLE HEALTH RISKS
The number of smokers is still high in many OECD countries, and too many
people are overweight. But despite the health risks these problems pose,
growth of health expenditure as a percentage of GDP has stabilized across
the OECD area and is actually falling in some countries. These are some of
the conclusions to be found in OECD Health Data 2001

RESEARCH ON WOMEN'S HEALTH: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
The The Canadian Foundation for Women's Health <http://www.cfwh.org>
(CFWH), announces a second research grant competition for 2001. As a
result of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada
Contraception Awareness Program, the CFWH will award $200,000 in five
grants up to $40,000 each, for research in all aspects of women's health.
Grant recipients will be announced in November 2001.
Proposals must be received by September 10, 2001.

17 COUNTRIES ARE FACING EXCEPTIONAL FOOD EMERGENCIES IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA

FAO CONCERNED ABOUT DETERIORATING FOOD SITUATION IN SUDAN, SOMALIA AND
ZIMBABWE
In sub-Saharan Africa, 17 countries are facing exceptional food emergencies
caused by difficult weather conditions, persistent civil strife and
insecurity, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said in a new
report published today (Food Supply Situation and Crop Prospects in
sub-Saharan Africa).

FIRST NOTICE: 10th OTTAWA CONFERENCE ON MEDICAL EDUCATION- 2002
The 10th Ottawa Conference will take place in Ottawa June 30-July 2, 2002.
It will be preceded by a day of symposia and workshops on Saturday June 29.
The Ottawa conference is the largest international regularly held meeting
on medical education. It takes place every second year, alternating between
venues in North America and the rest of the world. The first call for
papers will be issued in late summer 2001.

UKRAINE: DRAFT COUNTRY PROGRAM STRATEGY
The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has produced a new
draft country program strategy for Ukraine to guide its programming from
2002 to 2006. Although CIDA has already conducted numerous focus-group
meetings to gather public input on the strategy, the Agency would like to
ensure that all interested parties in Canada and abroad have the
opportunity to provide their comments.

Comme les annees precedentes, nous vous demandons de bien vouloir designer
une ou plusieurs personnes dont l'action en sante internationale merite
d'etre reconnue officiellement. En 1998, la Societe canadienne pour la
sante internationale a cree le prix de l'Action en sante internationale
pour la sante et le developpement afin de reconnaitre les efforts
exceptionnels et prolonges de personnes qui se sont distinguees dans ce
domaine. Le Prix est attribue tous les ans a l'occasion de la Conference
canadienne de sante internationale. Le premier laureat fut le Dr. Pierre
Viens, de Quebec, en reconnaissance de son travail et son devouement en
sante internationale et pour son implication en tant que membre fondateur
de la SCSI et de la Conference canadienne sur la sante internationale. Les
Drs Elizabeth et Donald Hillman ont ete les deuxiemes laureats en 1999
pour avoir consacre leur vie a la cause de la sante internationale; et le
Dr Vic Neufeld a recu le Prix en 2000.

L'ACDI OUVRE UN BUREAU REGIONAL A EDMONTON, EN ALBERTA

Le 21 aout 2001
Edmonton (Alberta) - Maria Minna, ministre canadienne de la Cooperation
internationale, a annonce aujourd'hui l'inauguration du bureau regional de
l'Agence canadienne de developpement international (ACDI) pour les
Prairies, a Edmonton, en Alberta.
Le bureau regional jouera un role d'encadrement et de soutien aupres des
organisations qui desirent travailler avec l'ACDI dans les pays en
developpement. Sa directrice, Ruth Shapiro, et les representants de l'ACDI
en Saskatchewan et au Manitoba esperent que cette presence dans la region
aidera a sensibiliser les groupes d'interet regionaux aux programmes de
l'ACDI, qu'ils les comprendront mieux et qu'ils participeront davantage a
ceux-ci.

"LUTTER CONTRE LA FAIM POUR REDUIRE LA PAUVRETE"
est le theme choisi cette annee pour la Journee mondiale de l'alimentation,
celebree tous les ans le 16 octobre, jour anniversaire de la fondation de
la FAO en 1945. Ce theme met l'accent sur le fait que la faim est la
manifestation la plus grave de la pauvrete, et que son elimination est le
premier pas vers la reduction de la pauvrete et vers la realisation du but
de la Nourriture Pour Tous.

Les donnees de l'OCDE incitent a penser que les pouvoirs publics pourraient
mener une action plus determinee pour faire regresser les risques evitables
en matiere de sante. Le nombre de fumeurs reste eleve dans de nombreux
pays de l'OCDE, et un trop grand nombre de souffrent d'obesite. Mais, en
depit des risques que cela represente sur le plan de la sante, les depenses
de sante en pourcentage du PIB ont cesse d'augmenter dans la zone de
l'OCDE, et elles sont meme en baisse dans certains pays. Telles sont
quelques-unes des conclusions que l'on peut trouver dans Eco-Sante OCDE
2001, </els/health/software/> qui est la derniere edition de la base de
donnees interactive que l'OCDE presente chaque annee et qui permet des
comparaisons entre les systemes de sante des 30 pays de l'OCDE sur toute
une liste essentiels de la sante.

Sante des femmes: competition de subventions de recherche
La Fondation canadienne de la sante <http://www.cfwh.org> annonce une
deuxieme competition de subventions de recherche pour 2001. Par l'entremise
du Programme de sensibilisation en matiere de contraception de la Societe
des obstetriciens et gynecologues du Canada, la Fondation accordera
200,000$ repartis en cinq subventions d'un maximum de 40,000$ chacune, pour
la recherche dans tous les domaines de la sante des femmes.
Les propositions doivent etre recues au plus tard le lundi 10 septembre
2001.

En Afrique subsaharienne, 17 pays sont en situation d'urgence alimentaire
exceptionnelle en raison des conditions meteorologiques defavorables, des

UKRAINE: EBAUCHE - STRATEGIE REGINALE DE PROGRAMMATION
L'Agence canadienne de developpement international (ACDI) vient de produire
une nouvelle ebauche de la strategie de programmation pour l'Ukraine. Ce
document guidera le travail de l'ACDI en Ukraine de 2002 a 2006. Nous avons
deja tenu plusieurs rencontres strategiques dans le but de recueillir les
commentaires du public sur le Cadre de programmation et nous souhaitons
faire en sorte que toutes les parties interessees au Canada et a l'etranger
aient l'occasion de fournir leurs commentaires.
