The following note contains information about changes to the ResNet
service as well as a planned service outage.

Changes To ResNet:
-----------------

On August 31, we'll be making several changes to the ResNet service
and resnet network infrastructure.

Currently we offer three security zones to ResNet users. The
Browsers Zone, the Server Zone and the Unprotected Zone. Our
experience over the past year has shown that there is very little
demand for the Server Zone. As such we have decided to eliminate the
Server zone in the ResNet, and recover those IP addresses for use in
other Zones. Sometime between 1pm - 2pm on August 31, the few users
who are currently in the server zone will be moved to the
Unprotected Zone (the uprotected zone is better match than the
browser zone). The elimination of the Server Zone, and the
corresponding reorganization of the IP address space in the ResNet
will result in a change of IP address for almost all ResNet users
between 1pm - 2pm on August 31. Users who experience any kind of
network problem after this period should shut their computer off for
30 minutes to allow their network port to be automatically
reconfigured.

People registering for ResNet service in the various undergradute
residence buildings will be asked to provide us with information
about where they live on campus. This is the same form people will
use if they move from one undergrad. building to another undergrad
buildings. It is VERY important that people fill out this
information correctly. It is likely that people who fill in
incorrect information, or fail to update this information when they
change buildings will find their network service unusable. We
recommend that people in the undergraduate buildings log into the
resnet wesite (http://resnet.yorku.ca) sometime after August 31 to
confirm their building and room settings.

ResNet Service Outage:
---------------------

In order to accomplish the above changes, as well as several behind
the scene changes to improve ResNet service, their will be a general
ResNet service outage August 31 from 1pm - 2pm.

Users who experience network connectivity problem after 2pm on
August 31 are advised to try the following:

1) Shutdown your computer and disconnect the network cable from the
wall jack for 30 minutes. This will allow your network port time to
readjust to the new ResNet network configuration. As long as your
computer is using the network port, the port can not automatically
reconfigure itself.

2) Every computer connected to the ResNet network must be registered
with the ResNet service. Users in undergraduate residence buildings
can register one computer, users in the York Apartments (Atkinson,
Assiniboine and Passy) can register two computers. Users in the
York Apartments must make sure that both computer are in the same
Security Zone. If you attempt to use an unregistered computer or
attempt to use two registered computers that are in different
Security Zones, the network port will recognize that something is
wrong and turn itself off. If you are having a problem, please make
sure your computer(s) are properly registered via the ResNet website
(http://resnet.yorku.ca). This website can be access from any
campus networked computer including campus public access
computers/kiosks, and campus computer labs.

3) Check to make sure your computer is properly configured to use
DHCP to get your IP address, default router/gateway, and the IP
addresses of the ResNet DNS servers. If you have manually entered
any of the above values into your computer's configuration, you may
have problems.

Questions or concerns about this outage or any of the changes to the
ResNet service, should be directed to the CNS Helpdesk in the
Steacie Science Library Building, (voice: 736-5800, email:
