SUMA, the Pan American Health Organization's Humanitarian Supply Management

PAHO CENTENNIAL WEB PAGE LAUNCHED
In anticipation and preparation for the celebration of the 100th anniver
sary of the world's oldest, continuously functioning, international public
health organization, PAHO has launched a centennial Web page at
www.paho.org/100. The Web page, part of the PAHO Web site, has been
launched in English will soon be available in Spanish. Current features
include: a message from the Director, a calendar of centennial events,
profiles of the centennial advisory board members, entry forms and
guidelines for the centennial poster and essay contests, a media corner and
a centennial archives. The site will be continuously updated and many new
features will be added as we enter the centennial year.

NEW US GOVERNMENT PORTAL PROVIDES SPANISH-SPEAKERS WITH EASY ACCESS TO
RELIABLE HEALTH INFORMATION
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently launched a
Spanish-language version of their award-winning healthfinder website.
Healthfinder is a "portal" website that links to a broad range of consumer
health information resources produced by the U.S. federal government and
its many partner organizations. It is a free guide to reliable consumer
health and human services information, providing easy access to selected
online publications, clearinghouses, databases, websites, and support and
self-help groups, as well as government agencies and not-for-profit
organizations that produce reliable information for the public

WORK CALLED KEY INFLUENCE ON MENTAL HEALTH AFTER ATTACKS
The environment in the workplace plays a key role in mental health,
especially now when many people face additional stress as a result of
terrorist attacks on the United States, according to mental health experts
at the Pan American Health Organization. Dr. Jose Miguel Caldas de Almeida,
coordinator of PAHO's Program on Mental Health, notes that work "can have a
significant influence on mental health and well being." He adds that in
some cases, "work can also be a cause of stress and mental disorders" when
there are poor working conditions, work overload, poor communication with
superiors and colleagues, role conflict and role ambiguity." To read more,

PAHO SEEKS CANADIAN CONSULTANT FOR WORKERS' HEALTH PROJECT
Under the supervision of PAHO and Caribbean governments, the consultant
will participate for a three-month period in the "Worker's Health and
Health Sector Reform Project" to improve human health and quality of
environment in the workplaces of the Caribbean. The goal of this project
is to contribute to the reduction of morbidity and mortality from chronic
and communicable diseases as well as to improve the quality of human health
and the environment in workplaces.
The consultant will:
-Meet with officials in the public and private sectors of the Bahamas, St.
Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica to in order to ascertain the status
of National Workers' Health plans and programs (policies).
-Review worker's health plan, policy and legislation in light of country
structures to manage workers' health priorities and promote effective
strategies to increase awareness to health and safety in the working
environment.
-Assist in the drafting of national policy on workers' health.
-Assess the knowledge-base of professionals involved in the workers' health
program.
-Assist PAHO in the development of local training curricula in workers'
health.
-Meet with relevant stakeholders: government, trade unions, NGOs, community
groups and private sector.
-Draft project proposals for mobilization of resources.
-Provide of technical advice and assistance as required.
This project will establish a fundamental mechanism for a healthy working
population and will facilitate the sustainable development of the selected
countries.

PAHO SEEKS CANADIAN CONSULTANT FOR SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROJECT
Under the supervision of Dr. Graciela Uriburu, PAHO/ WHO Representative in
Belize, the consultant will participate for a three-month period in the
"Sexual and Reproductive Health Project" to investigate the reasons behind
Belize's high level of maternal mortality. The consultant will produce a
comprehensive study and analysis of the causes of maternal mortality in
Belize for use by the country in planning specific intervention strategies
to decrease the level of maternal mortality.
The consultant will:
-Work with the Ministry of Health to identify and review epidemiological
data /relevant documents regarding maternal mortality.
-Work with identified focal points in the Ministry of Health to design
methodology and instruments for the study.
-Work with the Ministry of Health to hold workshop(s) with stakeholders
(in the private and public sectors) including the Statistical Unit, heads
of other institutions, obstetricians, gynecologists and pediatricians to
discuss the project, including methodology and the instrument to be used.
-Pretest the instrument at Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and District
Hospitals.
-Redesign instrument with changes identified.
-Carry out the survey.
-Analyze the data and prepare a report.
-Conduct a workshop with the stakeholders to discuss i) the findings of
the study and ii) the way forward / strategies to address the problem.
-Review and prepare a proposal to develop or strengthen the surveillance
system.
The project will provide data and analysis that could be used to plan
intervention programs in support of country efforts to promote safe
motherhood, reduce maternal mortality and establish a surveillance system.

CSIH SOUTH CAUCASUS HEALTH INFORMATION PROJECT- PROJECT COORDINATOR
CSIH is currently looking for an individual to work in Ottawa, Ontario, as
project coordinator of the CIDA-funded South Caucasus Health Information
Project (Phase 2). The aim of this project is to build capacity for health
reform through the development of health information systems in Armenia,
Azerbaijan and Georgia.
Reporting to the Project Manager, the Coordinator will assist in the
management of the South Caucasus Health Information Project and coordinate,
monitor and report on specific project management and training activities.
Duties and Related Tasks:
-Prepare draft project strategy documents, workplans, budgets and reports
-Monitor project budget, prepare draft financial reports
-Assist in developing and implementing project monitoring and evaluation
system
-Coordinate and participate in project review missions, as required
-Coordinate and participate in various project committee meetings
-Develop and organize training activities, such as study tours and
workshops, as required
-Assist in the development and implementation of project communications
strategy
Qualifications and Experience:
-Master's degree in health administration/ management, project management,
or a similar field, with an emphasis on health and/or international
development.
-Minimum of two years experience in project development, implementation,
and management, including budgeting and financial management.
-Knowledge of Canadian health system, "health in development' issues and
priority issues in Former Soviet Union countries.
-Understanding of the principles of Results-Based Management and
familiarity with CIDA policies.
-Demonstrated competence in writing proposals, reports and publications.
-Excellent inter-personal skills and cross-cultural understanding.
-Ability to work effectively in the international environment.
-Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
-Fluency in English. Working knowledge of Russian and/ or French would be
an
asset.

WHO: Junior researchers possessing or about to complete a PhD or health
professional degree interested in collaborating with decision-makers and
conducting applied health services research;researchers in the social
sciences,humanities, business,management and nursing are particularly
encouraged to apply.
WHAT: Two-year (or part-time equivalent) research training program that
includes: placement with a decision-making organization,
development of communication skills. Program also includes at least two of
the following activities: interdisciplinary teamwork on priority
health-system issues, acquisition of new tools and experience to deepen
specialty knowledge teaching undergraduates and graduates, or mentoring
graduates.
VALUE: $45,000 annual (or part-time equivalent) stipend and $5,000 annual
allowance.

CRIAW RESEARCH GRANTS-IN-AID
The Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women offers
annually grants of $2,500 for projects that promote the advancement of
women. This year, 10 grants will be awarded. The research can be the
subject of a proposal that is complete in itself, or part of a larger
study. The work can be in its initial stages, or it can be an on-going
project. A regional and linguistic balance will be maintained in the
awarding of grants. The project must make a significant contribution to
feminist research and be non-sexist, non-racist and non-homophobic in its
methodology and language. Preference is given to community-based research
of sound methodology that is likely to lead to positive change for women.
Priority will be given to:
-emerging independent researchers
-women's groups
Note: CRIAW does not fund research which is part of the requirements for an
educational degree; nor does it fund projects for aid to publication (i.e.
to publish a completed research project) or workshops and conferences.
Each project will be evaluated by members of CRIAW Research Grants
Committee. The decisions of the committee will be final. No individual

The Canadian International Development Agency, in collaboration with the

submission of Proposals for Small Grants to encourage new or emerging
partnerships between Canadian organizations and those in developing
countries or countries-in-transition to address HIV/AIDS priority issues.
The Canadian Society for International Health (CSIH) must receive complete
proposal applications by 4:30pm EST November 13, 2001. Applications not
received by the deadline will not be considered under any circumstance.

including Canada, in Afghanistan, has raised the possibility of
significantly increased dangers for Canadians abroad. Canadian involvement
may result in strong anti-Canadian sentiments and retaliatory actions
throughout the world.
Canadians abroad are advised to be especially vigilant and avoid situations
where political violence and demonstrations may occur. They should limit
travel in the days ahead and maintain contact with the nearest Canadian
government office. Canadians should monitor local developments and news
broadcasts carefully, and follow the advice of local authorities. There
could be increased delays at airports and other transportation facilities.

Qualifications:
-Bonne maitrise de l'anglais
-Experience de travail dans un bureau et familiarite avec l'equipement

-Bonnes connaissances des logiciels suivant: Microsoft Word, Access et
Excel
-Faire preuve d'autonomie ainsi qu'une bonne capacite de travail en equipe

COORDONATEUR/TRICE DU PROJET D'INFORMATION SUR LA SANTE EN CAUCASIE DU SUD
La SCSI est a la recherche d'un individu pour remplir le poste de
coordonateur ou coordonatrice de la deuxieme phase du Projet d'information
sur la sante en Caucasie du Sud a Ottawa, Ontario. Ce projet, finance par
l'ACDI, a pour but de developper la capacite de maintenir un reseau
d'information sur la sante en Armenie, Azerbaijan et en Georgie. Faisant
rapport au chef du projet, la coordonatrice ou le coordonnateur aidera dans
la
gestion du Projet d'information sur la sante en Caucasie du Sud.
Taches associees a la fonction:
-Preparation des documents d'ebauches de strategies, plans de travail,
budgets et rapports
-Surveillance des budgets de projet, preparation des ebauches de rapports
financiers
-Ecriture de lettres d'entente pour les participants du projet
-Aide dans le developpement et la mise en place d'un systeme d'evaluation
et de surveillance du projet
-Coordination et participation dans les missions de revue du projet, selon
le besoin
-Coordination et participation dans les divers reunions des comites du
projet
-Developpement, planification et organisation de sessions de formation, par
exemple, des ateliers et des excursions, selon le besoin
-Aide dans le developpement et la mise en place d'une strategie de
communication pour le projet
Competences et experience:
-Une maitrise en administration de la sante ou en gestion de la sante, dans
la gestion de projets, ou un domaine semblable, avec une emphase sur la
sante et/ou sur le developpement international
-Un minimum de deux ans d'experience en developpement de projets, dans la
mise en place et dans la gestion, y compris la gestion financiere
-Bonnes connaissance du domaine de sante canadien, de la "sante dans le
developpement" et des sujets prioritaires de l'Ancienne Union Sovietique
-Connaissance des principes de gestion axee sur les resultats et des
politiques de l'ACDI
-Aptitudes demontrees en redaction de documents, de rapports et de
publications
-Excellentes aptitudes en matiere de communication ecrite et verbale
-Excellentes aptitudes d'entregent et comprehension inter-culturelle
-Capacite de travailler effectivement dans le domaine international
-Bonnes connaissances de la micro informatique: Excel, PowerPoint et Word
-Bonne maitrise de l'anglais
-La connaissance du francais et/ou du russe serait un atout

QUI : Ce concours s'adresse aux jeunes chercheurs titulaires d'un doctorat
(ou sur le point
d'en obtenir un) ou d'un diplome professionnel souhaitant collaborer avec
des
decideurs et entreprendre des recherches appliquees sur les services de
sante.
Les chercheurs travaillant dans les domaines des sciences sociales, des
sciences
humaines, des affaires, de la gestion et des sciences infirmieres sont
particulierement
encourages a se presenter.
QUOI : Programme de formation a la recherche.
Duree : Deux ans (ou equivalent a temps partiel).
Comprend : Un placement dans un organisme decideur et le developpement des
capacites de communication.
Le programme comprend aussi au moins deux des activites suivantes :
-Travail en equipe interdisciplinaire sur les questions prioritaires du
systeme de sante
-Acquisition de nouveaux outils et d'une nouvelle experience pour
approfondir les connaissances specialisees
-Enseignement aux etudiants de 2 e et de 3 e cycles ou mentorat des
etudiants diplomes
VALEUR :
Bourse de 45 000 $ par an (ou equivalent en temps partiel) et allocation de
5 000 $ par an.

partenariat entre la fondation et les Instituts de recherche en sante du

LES SUBVENTIONS DE RECHERCHE DE L'ICREF
L'Institut canadien de recherches sur les femmes offre annuellement des
subventions de recherche de 2 500 $ a des projets favorisant l'amelioration
des conditions de vie des femmes. Cette annee, 10 subventions seront
accordees. La recherche peut etre l'objet d'une proposition complete en
elle-meme ou faire partie d'une etude de plus grande envergure. Le travail
peut en etre a ses debuts ou etre un projet en cours. Une representation
regionale et linguistique equilibree sera un facteur dans le choix de
l'octroi des subventions. Le projet doit apporter une contribution
importante a la recherche feministe; la methodologie et le langage doivent
etre non-sexistes, non-racistes et non-homophobes.
La preference sera accordee a des projets venant de la communaute, ayant
une methodologie bien developpee et menant au changement positif pour les
femmes. La priorite ira aux projets venant de groupes de femmes ou
entrepris par des chercheur-es qui commencent a s'affirmer dans le domaine
de la recherche. Veuillez noter que l'ICREF ne subventionne pas la
recherche qui est effectuee en fonction de l'obtention d'un grade
universitaire ni l'aide a la publication (i.e. pour publier un projet de
recherche complete), ni l'organisation de conferences et d'ateliers. Vous

En collaboration avec la Societe canadienne de sante internationale (SCSI)
et la Coalition interagences sida et developpement (CISD), l'Agence
canadienne de developpement international est heureuse de lancer un appel
de propositions pour des petites subventions destinees a encourager de
nouveaux partenariats entre des organisations canadiennes et des
organisations de pays en developpement ou en transition au sujet des
questions prioritaires touchant le vih/sida.
Les propositions doivent parvenir a la Societe canadienne de sante
internationale (SCSI) d'ici au 13 novembre 2001, a 16h30 HNE. Les
propositions recues apres cette date ne pourront en aucun cas etre
examinees. Prevoyez suffisamment de temps si vous expediez votre
proposition par la poste ou par messager; vous pouvez aussi la faire
parvenir a la SCSI par courrier electronique, dans les delais prescrits.
Toutefois, les lettres de collaboration doivent etre expediees par la poste

Crise aux E.-U. et voyages a l'etranger: A la suite de l'intervention
militaire engagee en Afghanistan par les pays de la coalition, dont le
Canada, les ressortissants canadiens qui se trouvent a l'etranger
pourraient etre exposes a des risques sensiblement plus eleves. La
participation du Canada pourrait engendrer des sentiments anti-canadiens et
susciter des represailles a travers le monde.
Le ministere recommande aux Canadiens d'etre particulierement vigilants et
d'eviter les situations qui risquent de degenerer en manifestations ou en
actes de violence politique. Vous devriez limiter vos deplacements au cours
des jours qui viennent et rester en contact avec le bureau du gouvernement
canadien le plus rapproche. Soyez attentifs a l'evolution de la situation
locale et aux bulletins de nouvelles la ou vous vous trouvez, et suivez les
