WHO URGES INFLUENZA VACCINATION FOR NORTHERN HEMISPHERE

As influenza season in the northern hemisphere peaks, WHO is urging, in
particular, the elderly and those with chronic illness to see their
doctor and get their flu vaccination. The composition of the influenza
vaccine for the northern hemisphere for 2002-2003 was announced today,
as part of an annual process by which WHO brings together influenza
experts to decide the composition of the vaccine for the next year. This
vaccine saves hundreds of thousands of lives each year.

NATURAL AND DELIBERATELY CAUSED EPIDEMICS: IS EUROPE READY TO RESPOND?

Although all WHO European Region countries have surveillance systems to
monitor diseases, national capacities need to be supported by strong
regional and global networks, such as the Global Outbreak Alert and
Response Network. Experts will discuss increasing the capacity of
European public health systems to rapidly detect and respond to disease
outbreaks, whether caused naturally or deliberately, at a meeting this
week at the WHO Office for Communicable Disease Surveillance and
Response in Lyons, France. http://www.who.dk/mediacentre/PR/20020201_2

SEVERE INCREASE IN MALNUTRITION IN MAZLAKH CAMP, AFGHANISTAN

‘Here you have the absurd situation that the longer people stay in the
camp, the more malnourished they get’, said Stefano Savi, head of the
MSF project in Herat. Despite international optimism and the millions
of dollars in aid being promised for Afghanistan, there are still huge
problems in terms of immediate humanitarian needs.

INFECTIOUS DISEASES REPORT POINTS THE WAY FROM POVERTY TO HEALTH

Scaling Up the Response to Infectious Diseases: A Way Out of Poverty, a
new report by WHO, UNICEF, UNAIDS, the World Bank, UNESCO and UNFPA,
will be launched at the World Economic Forum. The Report calls for new
investment for treating and preventing TB, malaria and HIV/AIDS. By
expanding the use of known interventions, TB and malaria deaths could be
cut in half and new HIV infections in young people could be reduced by
25% in a decade.
