In order to perform some emergency work on one of York DNS
servers, it was necessary to take one of our DNS servers out of
production at 1:00pm today. Service should return to normal by
8:00pm.

The DNS server affected is:

130.63.237.99

The DNS servers are used by internet applications to convert host
names to network IP addresses.

Users who have correctly configured their computers with the IP
addresses of three appropriate DNS servers may experience small
delays on all internet connections during the server outage.

Users who have configured their computers with only one DNS server
will likely suffer a complete outage on all internet connections.

CNS strongly suggests that York Main Campus users configure
their machines to use the following search sequence for the DNS
servers:

   130.63.168.21
   130.63.237.99
   132.251.1.2

The DNS configuration for Glendon users should be:

   130.63.152.14
   130.63.168.21
   130.63.237.99

The DNS configuration for ResNet users is automatically set by
the ResNet system via DHCP. ResNet users should follow the
ResNet documentation appropriate to their operating system.

The DNS configuration for Modem Pool users is automatically set by
the modem pool access servers. Unfortunately, the modem pool
access servers are configured to advertise 130.63.237.99 as the
primary DNS server to PPP/SLIP clients. This outage will result
in small delays for modem pool users while resolving Internet
addresses.

CNS apologizes for any inconvenience this service slowdown may
cause. Please be assured we are working as quickly as
possible to return to normal service levels.

Questions or concerns about these outages, should be directed to
the CNS Helpdesk in the Steacie Science Library Building, (voice:
736-5800, email: [log in to unmask]).
