Live Long and Prosper:
The Next Generation of the Health-Determinants Approach to Health and
Physical Activity

Presented by Joan Wharf Higgins, School of Physical Education, University of
Victoria

Sponsored by the Alberta Centre for Well-Being, Edmonton

Does health = wealth? Many studies prove that social and economic conditions
affect both individual and community health. Income, employment, education,
and gender are examples of key factors that influence or determine health
and physical activity levels.

Find out more about how to apply this health-determinants approach in your
practice. This workshop sums up both the research that led to this approach
and the current state of thinking in this area. During this workshop, you
will also work through scenarios that will help you understand the key
factors that determine individual and community health and physical activity
levels, and will have an opportunity to apply this approach.

Workshop Leader:
Joan Wharf Higgins, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the School of Physical
Education at the University of Victoria. She has degrees in Leisure Studies
(BA), Adult Health & Fitness (MA), and Health Promotion (PhD). Joan’s
research and teaching interests include planning and evaluation, social
marketing, and community and population health. Currently, Joan is working
with community agencies and partners to study the impact of recreation in
promoting the health of populations.

When:
Friday, October 12, 2001
Workshop: 9:30 am–12:30 pm

Where:
