Post-doctoral Fellow for Pathways to Health
and Community Partnership Research

Fellowship Description
Applications are invited for a one or two year, full-time postdoctoral
fellowship position beginning September 2002. This fellowship offers a
rich variety of experience working within a multidisciplinary environment
on a number of research projects currently funded in the area of knowledge
management and health care research. The position will work at the
interface of behavioural and information sciences as they relate to
population health, health services, health services reform, community
partnership and evidenced based decision making. Specifically, the
incumbent will explore the following:
§ outcome evaluation
§ interactive computer technology for learning and behaviour change
§ integrated information systems and knowledge management
§ impact of technology on work and health care
§ linked databases
§ health technology assessment

Fellows are encouraged to initiate research within the study topics
outlined above. The annual stipend offered is $45,000 plus benefits.

Training Resources

Allan Best, PhD (direct supervisor), is a health psychologist whose career
has focused on building conceptual and methodological bridges between
behavioural sciences and health care. He has led projects in primary care,
schools, workplaces, hospitals, and whole communities to foster
behavioural, cultural, and structural changes at the individual, regional,
and population levels, particularly in the area of health promotion. His
work is characterized by tight links between models, measures, and
interventions, using a mix of rigorous designs for quantitative outcome
studies and qualitative methods to study process.

Ellen Balka, PhD is Associate Professor, School of Communication at Simon
Fraser University, and Director of the Assessment of Technology in Context
Design Lab. The focus of her work is on field assessment of human
interaction with information technology, technology design, and
implementation. This special interest in participatory design of health
information technology and computer-supported cooperative work is pivotal
for the kind of integrated health information systems we hope to foster.

James Frankish, PhD is Associate Director of the Institute of Health
Promotion Research at the University of British Columbia, one of Canada’s
leading centres for health promotion and policy research. He is a B.C.
Health Research Scholar, with major interests in community participation in
health decision-making, participatory research methods, dissemination, and
health impact assessment. Recent publications highlight a wide range of
applied health promotion and policy research projects, including extensive
population health best practice assessment work.

Francis Lau is Director of the School of Health Information Science at the
University of Victoria. A PhD graduate in health informatics specialized in
the design, implementation and evaluation of health information systems, he
also has a diverse background in business administration, computing and
medical sciences, with 15 years of professional experience in the
information technology (IT) industry. Francis’ recent projects include a
CPHI grant to study regional health indicators and knowledge management,
the development of an electronic evidence-based framework for injury
management knowledge, fostering a virtual network in community health
research in Alberta, and establishing a distance learning program for
health professionals in evidence-based practice.

Robert Reid, MD is a physician and health services researcher whose primary
research interests center on the interface between primary and specialty
care, ambulatory case-mix adjustment, methods of physician payment, and
measurement of quality in primary care settings. Dr. Reid’s central roles
in the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research are to oversee
development of an expanded database using the B.C. Linked Health Database
as a cornerstone, bridging between health services research and the Primary
Care Research Network. In October 2001, Dr. Reid was awarded an inaugural
Scholar award by the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research. An
on-going project for CHSRF on defining and measuring continuity of care
will see the publication of a major report in 2002.

Experience, Education and other Requirements
1. Any innovative mix of relevant preparation will be considered for
this unique interdisciplinary training position. The most likely
qualifications are a PhD in behavioural or social sciences (psychology,
anthropology, sociology, information sciences or other related disciplines)
2. Publications in the field
3. Knowledge of information science as it relates to health care systems

Deadline
By May 1st, 2002, applicants are requested to submit:
1. current curriculum vitae
2. a brief overview of research areas of interest along with a
description of short term objectives to be achieved with a fellowship, and
long term career goals
3. three letters of recommendation
4. graduate transcripts
