Responding to the pressing need for graduates equipped with the knowledge,
skills, and critical perspectives necessary to play decision making and
leadership roles in our increasingly complex and dynamic health care sector,
Atkinson is pleased to announce the launch of a new School of Health Policy and
Management.

The School houses three innovative major programs -- Health Policy, Health
Management, and Health Informatics -- all leading to a Specialized Honours,
Bachelor of Health Studies (BHS).

As an integral element of all three programs, the Bachelor of Health Studies
degree has an optional co-op placement. The Placement provides students with
paid experience in a health related field in either three or four month blocks
during the summer session (May

? July or May - August). Health Policy     The Health Policy major is designed to equip graduates with the analytical framework and tools that will enable them to participate effectively in policy research, development, and implementation at all levels in the health care system. The career options associated with the program are Health Policy Analyst, Planner, Researcher, Health Care Advocate, among others. Health Management     The Health Management major is constructed around a core business administration curriculum supplemented by a range of state-of-the-art health management courses to prepare graduates to run complex, multidisciplinary health care programs and enterprises. This program will provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to operate effectively in community and institutional settings, as well as within a variety of service delivery models. The career options associated with the program are Health Administrator, Health Systems Planner and/or Analyst, among others. Health Informatics     The Health Informatics major emphasizes the acquisition and application of research, analysis, and system design expertise within the context of health care decision making, resource allocation, and program evaluation. Graduates of this major program will be well equipped to pursue responsible roles in health sector planning and development. The career options associated with the program are Health Information Specialist, Systems Designer, and Systems Integration Specialist among others.                             Summer Co-Op Placements      Co-op placements are important parts of the Health Policy, Health Management, and Health Informatics programs. Their overall objective is to provide students with paid experience in organizations, agencies, or businesses related to their program of study. They also offer a chance for students to explore the kinds of jobs that students may take up upon completion of their degree program.      Placements can be of 12 or 16 weeks duration. It is to be a full time employment situation by which students are paid from $10 - $15 an hour for a full 35 hour week. Each placement must be approved by the co-op director.      Both student and employer will be asked to provide a brief evaluative statement concerning the co-op placement upon completion describing the extent to which it met the needs of the student and the employer.      For further information about co-op placements, please contact                              Dennis Raphael, Ph.D.              Associate Professor and Undergraduate Program Director                      School of Health Policy and Management               Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies                                 York University                                4700 Keele Street                             Toronto, Ontario M3J 1P3                             416-736-2100, ext. 22134                             email: [log in to unmask] Summer Jobs -- Important Notice to Employers from the Federal Government Summer Career Placements is a wage subsidy program that enables employers to hire students during the summer for a period of 6-16 weeks.
