apologies for cross-posting, and thanks to my colleague for sharing this interesting call for papers.

"Public Health and the City", a Special Issue of The Urban History Review/Revue d'histoire urbaine

The Urban History Review / Revue d'histoire urbaine invites submissions for a theme issue on Public Health and the City, to be published in Fall, 2007.

This issue will provide a timely opportunity to survey our understanding of the history of public health in cities in Canada and the Americas, and coincides with the upcoming annual meeting of the CHA/SHC (Canadian Historical Association/Société
historique du Canada), the principal theme of which will be "The City". The CHA/SHC meetings are being held at York University (Toronto, Ontario) in May, 2006.

Papers on all aspects of the theme are welcome. Possible topics include (but are not limited to) the urban history of:

Mortality decline
Public health and sanitary reform
Health professionalization (medical, nursing, occupational, engineering, etc.)
Medical institutions
Family and domestic health and health care
Environmental health (waste, toxic, etc.)
Health/sanitary engineering

One page proposals for articles should be submitted by 15 December 2005. Final submissions should be from 6,000 to 8,000 words, with a deadline for completion of 1st August 2006. Please send all correspondence and proposals to the Editors listed
below.

We welcome papers either in English of French.

The UHR/RHU is concerned with the historical development of urban Canada in a broad sense, but will also publish non-Canadian material that deals with comparative, methodological or historiographical issues or topics. The Review is a refereed
journal. Prospective authors are invited to visit the Review's web site at: <http://www.hist.umontreal.ca/u/urbanhistory/home.html>
