"On the Horizon" is an electronic news capsule from the Horizons Program.
Horizons (<http://www.popcouncil.org/horizons/horizons.html>) is a global
operations research program designed to:
                *       Identify and test potential strategies to improve
HIV/AIDS prevention, care, and support programs and service delivery.
                *    Disseminate best practices and utilize findings with a
view toward replication and scaling up of successful interventions.

Horizons is implemented by the Population Council in partnership with the
International Center for Research on Women, the International HIV/AIDS
Alliance, the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health, Tulane
University, Family Health International, and Johns Hopkins University.

Young People and HIV/AIDS

Feature Stories:
        *       "Reducing HIV Infection Among Youth: What Can Schools Do?"
Baseline data from Mexico, South Africa, and Thailand reveal complex picture
of attitudes and behavior among students.

        *       "Are More Young People in South Africa Using Condoms?"
Study of adolescent life transitions finds "connectedness to parents" may be
a factor.

Studies in Brief:
        *       "Involving Youth in Care and Support for PLHA" Lusaka,
Zambia.  Study of anti-AIDS clubs finds that participatory training on HIV
prevention and care changed youths' attitudes toward PLHA.

        *       "Examining the Relationship Between Microfinance and HIV"
Harare, Zimbabwe.  A study of microentrepreneurs affected by chronic illness
and death in the family finds that participation in a microfinance program
is associated with small, but important strategies to help reduce negative
economic impacts.

        *       "Pioneering Study Reveals High Risk, Little Support for
Stigmatized MSM" Dakar, Senegal.  Findings highlight the need to reach MSM
with information and services but that program managers and policymakers
must also be sensitized in order to provide MSM with non-stigmatizing
interventions.

        *       "International Workshop Examines Access to Antiretroviral
Treatment" Washington, DC.  Numerous operational issues must be considered
for large-scale ARV treatment in resource-limited countries.
