The Canadian Foundation on Compulsive Gambling
(CFCG) cordially invites you to attend a
performance of “After the Beep” and reception at
the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts, Jane Mallet
Theatre, October 30 at 6:30 doors open 5:45pm.

The play, “after the beep” is the winner of a
first-ever play writing contest sponsored by the
Canadian Foundation on Compulsive Gambling (CFCG).
The contest challenged high school students to use
the medium of the theatre and live performance to
open up the lines of communication with their
peers about the growing problem of teen gambling
addictions.

The playwrights, Bridget Lamberts, Lily DeMiglio
and Carla Barriero were all high school students
at Mount St. Joseph College when they wrote the
winning play. Their entry was chosen from over
30 scripts submitted. The play features four
students away for their first year at university.
The lead character is a Canadian who wins a
swimming scholarship to college. He finds himself
in a dorm with a heavy gambler who proceeds to
have a destructive effect on most everyone around
him. The poignant lesson learned in “after the
beep” is one of potential loss – but not just in
the traditional gambling sense.

“After the Beep’ is a fast-paced and smartly
written mini-drama that asks thought provoking
questions about possible consequences of teen
gambling. This is an extremely important message
for teens, gambling addiction among youth is a
generally unrecognized problem.
